Snapchat IPO Only Days Away

By BayArea   Feb 25, 6:46am   6 links   1,517 views   31 comments   watch (2)   quote

Patnet, great news:

The powerhouse American manufacturing company "Snapchat" is days away from its initial public offering!

Oh wait, it's just an app company written by a millennial (who is 26 now) for millennials. Millennials love it because they can't commit to shit in life, including a sending a photo that isn't to appear on the receivers phone for more than 10sec.

Nevermind that they don't have a physical headquarters and operate out of bungalows in Venice Beach with remote programmers all over.

Snapchat sets IPO valuation at a mere $22B 😒

I'm fascinated so let's take things further

Monthly active users:

Snapchat - 301M
FB - 1.23B
Insta - 600M
YouTube - 1B

Snapchat almost exclusively makes money via advertising. Can they realize growth with such a useless concept?

Who is in?

All you have to do is open a brokerage account, wire in all your life savings, and set a buy order for the morning of the IPO.

Will your money do exactly what snapchats photos do after 10sec, poof disappear lol

How do they monetize it?

What are the chances of you being able to buy shares of the IPO?

What company can be used as a proxy for them, as Yahoo was with Alibaba?

You sound like a bitter old man.

lol, yes, I'm only 35 but have spent my entire career up to now in manufacturing - both telecom and semiconductor fields.

So these app companies with really far reaching valuations are facinating.

Before you accuse people of being bitter old men, consider that snapchat has no profit and that may never change.

IPO's of bogus business ideas are a means to transfer the bag to the bag holder. You know the VC's are pissed that they cannot do this with Theranos.

Oh NO!, we can't have that, can we? All teh bitter old men out there must promptly unbitter themselves or face the consequences. How dare they!

I could see utility in Snapchat back when many people didn't know how to do screen capture on Android, but I think that brief era has already passed. Snapchat remains popular among teens and 20somethings, like a college dorm party in full swing, but in the long run I don't see much point in a "disappearing" photo or message if the recipient can keep it by simply capturing the screen, and if Edward Snowden's former colleagues are storing everything in Utah for "Total Information Awareness". Right now it's "be there or be square," but it seems halfway to becoming a hula hoop or flares and people wondering WTF they were thinking.

I talked to a developer at snapchat who told me that the screen shot feature doesn't hurt them at all. In fact millennials, particularly female millennials, desire to have their pictures screen shot (the sender gets a confirmation of screen shot when the receiver performs a screen shot). He said girls are often offended if they send a guy a snap and it's not captured via screen shot.

Whacky lol

Let's see. The Snapchat valuation per active monthly user is $22B / 301M = $73

patrick.net had 22,830 active users in the last 30 days, per Google analytics. (OK, half of them took one look and bounced to somewhere else, but hey.)

Therefore patrick.net is worth $73 x 22,830 = $1.6M right?

I want to believe, I want to believe...

Patrick for a site like this, how much traffic do you think you would need to generate before some money begins being thrown in your direction?

I typically hear that 100,000 active/mo number thrown around.

You mean the MAU number needed to interest investors? I don't really know. Would prefer not to have investors because they would no doubt start imposing more restrictions on what people could say on the site.

Would be better to make money on my own, but that has proven very hard. At the site's peak in about 2008, I got 30,000 readers per day, and with Google Adsense was making $1,000/month. Which sucks, but maybe other kinds of advertising would be more profitable. Anything related to investing gets good advertising revenue. That's why I was thinking of making the site focused on investing. But I care more about the 40 proposals in the header. Meaning is important too.

Definitely going to sell some patrick.net swag via Shopify pretty soon.

Why not allow ads? Most sites do allow ads??

12   Patrick   May 4, 9:31am     ↑ like (2)   ↓ dislike   quote

Well, I suppose I should put ads back in some form. They might actually cover the cost of running the site at least.

Well, since you aren't getting any Amazon money for being a porn / illegal activity site, you might as well serve adult ads. They may pay more to get onto a non-porn site.

Snap stock tanks after IPO expenses run up a $2.2 billion loss for the first quarter

Shares plummeted more than 20 percent on Thursday. The company spent $2 billion on stock-based compensation expenses after its initial public offering, widening net losses for the quarter to $2.2 billion.

CEO Evan Spiegel got a $750 million bonus for taking Snap public. He told analysts on a conference call that the company was focused on improving quality for users during the first quarter, especially for those with Android mobile phones.

But not out of the door. The ones who jumped on the IPO were underwater for a long time, IIRC.

I don't know, it appears to be popular with young people.

The reason it will be valuable is as a vehicle for advertising.

Most of my best stocks over the last couple of years have been financials (not strictly banks): V, CBOE, SCHW, JPM

Not sure why that is.

That does kind of surprise me too. Banks and Insurance companies are seriously strong winners of this decade. It's like the plastics of the 80's.
