Why do so many people pay money to visit countries in the Caribbean etc. where conditions are so dire their own people risk death to escape?
I'm no thrill seeker (not then, not now.) The third person had bailed on the trip and I was doing my friends a favor by going, even though I made fun of the destination.
The flight out was unreal; the only thing the other passengers' carry on luggage was missing were goats. There were other incidences on the trip (harassing phone calls to our room, being stalked on the street - I might have said something that insulted their country ;-)
Getting to your question, I haven't heard of anyone risking death to leave the DR. As a matter of fact, I think they have things well under control, traveling back and forth with no worries. I do know, as the last group of illegal aliens to invade my NYC neighborhood, they pretty much polished it off and the last of us despicable Europeans bailed.
Back in those days, while in the shadows, they used $100 bills to light a cigarette (drug trade.)
