Moved from crappy neighborhood in Manhattan to Westchester County in 1993, sold in 2006. I only knew of one person in trouble when we left but we didn't know all that many people after moving up there from the city. I used to wonder at all the new cars and tales of opulent vacations I heard when I lived there; real poseurs in comparison to people I grew up with in NYC. They seemed to have unlimited cash. I knew we didn't.
After about 10 years, I told my family we are on a sleigh ride to hell, with the taxes increasing yearly, the outrageous cost of living and the poorly paying jobs. I read blogs like Patrick's, realized what was happening and sold; we moved to Las Vegas.
I wish I could say it worked out (I shouldn't say that it hasn't because if we stayed it would have been worse.) Now it's been seven years waiting for things to normalize. Please don't say I should have bought in 2010-2012. We had a more than adequate down payment but cash investors shut us out and my LL wanted an unreasonable price for our rental.
So now we're still watching, still waiting. In addition, 2008 and later medical expenses put a nice dent in our windfall. However, life is good! We've never missed a meal!
