Chronicle your house buying experience on Patrick.net,

Haven't been around in a while because we did buy in SF 2 months ago. Moving is rough, whether you are moving to another rental or into a house you buy.
Thrilled to be rid of our crazy landlord. Happy to have ended the housing waiting game. The years of checking in with patrick.net were very helpful as we waited for the bubble to pop.
It never really did crash here in the city. But prices came back to about 2003 levels, and that, coupled with 3.5% interest rate, made it possible for us.
Our PITI is less than our rent was. There seems to be no end in sight for rent increases. If the cost of buying AND renting both crash in the city, then I guess we made a bad decision, so only time will tell.
The bigger picture for us is that we want to have a paid off house by the time we retire, and gambling that the price of owning would come down even more didn't seem worth it, as we are only about 17 years away from retirement. We waited long enough and I have no plan of being a renter my entire life.
And I really like our new place, too. - On 11 Sep 2012

I love my 3bd, 1850 ft, double parlor, top floor, rent controlled flat, overlooking Dolores Park in San Francisco, at $1,500 a month!
So jealous. If I had a nice rent-controlled place I wouldn't even consider buying. But with rent at $2800 month and no rent control (single family home) and kids and dogs, forget about it.
We're either buying in the Excelsior or bust.
