The Bottom For Stocks?,
Chuck Ponzi said:
Patrick, great thoughts, but a couple of nits to pick:
1. Many financial stocks last year had massive losses. Therefore, break even this year will actually raise the overall earnings (and has been pointed out, I think the S&P 500 is poised for the first time in history to ever have negative earnings, so how do you value stocks that way?) Answer: sum of the parts, book value, etc, and all other valuation methods we learned in finance. There's more than one way to look at the value of a company.
2. What do you consider "prevailing interest rates"? Best priced CDs? At my present calculations (unscientific), I can get about a 2.25% CD for 5 years. Right now, there are skads of stocks to choose from that are blue chip and pay a better dividend than that.
3. Bonds are actually looking quite good since you get great returns and more protection than common shares. Preferred shares are also looking pretty decent.
Housing is much easier to determine it is overvalued, if you ask me. Stocks are very difficult. Just my $.02.

I'll go out on a limb here, since it's unlikely that many will agree with me. S&P500 is looking great by my estimation. Not much thought; great diversification; good growth prospects.
The consumer is dead, but big business can still do quite well in an inflationary environment once we get over this bout of deflation.
Of course, I think longer term than 1 year. I'm usually too early.
