Buy before it is too late!,

I bought in 1997 and sold in 2003, not because of the bubble but because we were moving to the east coast so my husband could go to law school here. The thought of purchasing here never crossed my mind because I thought we were at the peak then. Plus the 'words of wisdom' from my parents (never buy a house unless you plan to live there for 5+ years) was engrained in me and we're only going to be in this god-forsaken city (Philly) for less than 3 years total. Turns out if I would have bought here in 2003 I would have likely made a huge profit...oh well...in the meantime we are living on the cheap in an apartment for only $950/mo, utilities inc (a big plus for this winter!) and we still have the proceeds from the prveious place for a down payment when we decide to buy. - On 7 Jul 2005

Change in lifestyle after buying home,
Lisa9 said:
My kids are 3 and 1 years old. I cashed out of the LA real estate market in 2003 to be able to stay home with them. We are renting a cheap apartment right now and I'm having a great time w/ my kiddos :) When my husband graduates from law school next year, we are planning on moving back to CA. If we rent, I may be able to stay home with them for a little while longer. If/when we buy, then I'm going to go back to work. I wish our circumstances were such that we could move to a cheaper place, but I'm an only child and my parents (in LA) are in their 70s. Plus, I do have a great job in LA that I'm pretty sure I can go back to...might even be able to have Fridays off! We were considering Tucson a few months ago b/c that is still pretty close to CA, but now the bubble has spread there as well to the point where the cost/benefit is no longer appealing. - On 25 Jun 2005

What is to be done?,

T. Boone Pickens is big in the alt fuel/natural gas industry now so it is in his interest to say oil will be $120. When I worked for the City of LA, we hired his company to build us a natural gas refueling station. Not that he's necesarily wrong, but he is biased at least.
