I'm working with a friend on a senior care website, want to have a Q&A area. Does anyone have a suggestion for a question to start off with? The winner will have my undying gratitude.

    Question:

Is it true that immortality will soon be technologically feasible with all body parts replacement becoming reality?

    Answer:

Yes. Death will be an optional choice when the time is right. We will make that choice for you, so you won't have to worry about it.

Right now, you can keep a body alive pretty much as long as you want. Brains, however, aren't as amenable to life support as sinew. Which I guess explains some of the commentary here.

Thanks AF. Do you have any suggestions (not the fucking hilarious ones you normally raise) for a Q&A about senior issues?

I would start by saying how many amenities are given by the location.
security systems, elevators, amount of handrails, access to wheelchairs,
activities (ping pong, bridge club, reading club, knitting etc). Is there emergency response and if so what activates it (pulling a cord, pressing a button etc)

If they aren't given then where would they be relative to the building.
Is there public transportation nearby and if so what is it..some might be more likely to take a bus rather than a train.

Staffing levels might also be asked as well as if there is back up for the power. We lost power last month with Irene and there were some elderly housing complexes where people were pretty much stuck..elevators had no backup.

    My senior parents live independently.

One of them is very active but is held together in duct tape and rubber band cornucopia of meds. We all live like this unsustainable situation will be ongoingly sustaining itself as the years wend on, but of course this is not realistic.

My siblilngs and I fret about what we may have to do for different scenarios when it may come time to be more active in decisions and plans.

Ellie, what kind of service is it, just a Web site or an actual physical location providing those services?

One way to approach this is to build the Web site, then send people to it and request feedback by polling them for answers. Usability is very important for seniors. That and not using tiny little fonts. :)

It's a friend's website, which will be chock full of ellie articles. It's designed to provide all the info that you need in one place.

how to know when it's time to place a senior in a different setting, what the settings might be, payment for different places. How to keep a senior at home, nursing home advice, etc. Here's to hoping it gets off the ground. I'll link to it as soon as it's up & running.

We'll have a Q&A portion to it and I wanted questions that I could answer in a few paragraphs (to start).

We're already with you on that!

It drives me crazy when I hear people discussing retirement, like everyone has saved for it. You'd be surprised at how many people can't afford much, are trying to live on less than $1,000 a month.

The ones that break my heart are those who lost their savings to Madoff (I've met several) or other investments that have tanked. It's horrible.

    Keep those suggestions coming!

How does a older person get along in retirement when their significant other who received less SS money passes away.

That one hit my grandmother hard because she actually pulled more SS than my grandfather. When he passed away she didn't get the additional money since her SS was higher.

Other areas I was also interested in.

-The lack of licensed personnel at assisted living communities. I couldn’t believe that there may be only one registered nurse on the whole staff.

-The huge problem men have who are in their 70’s, 80’s, and 90’s taking care of themselves when their wife passes away. My wife’s grandfather never cooked, cleaned, or washed a single dish in his entire life. The family now cooks food and stocks up the fridge. He built his own house but doesn’t know how to cook. Weird!

-Talking finances for end of life planning.

-A family divide for the care.

-Only one family member who takes care of their parents because the rest are losers.

    -My father/mother/grandparent is a horder.

    Just quick thoughts.

your grandmother might qualify for a govt program, depending upon her income. feel free to "friend" me and we can discuss her specific situation. Ya never know...

If your grandfather was a Veteran, check out Veteranaid.org and read about Aid & Attendance. It's a valuable resource for those vets or widows who need help maintaining their independence.

This goes both ways - I've seen women who never pumped gas, never used an ATM card... the older generations had specific gender-based roles that are coming back to bite them.

Also typical; one family member assumes the responsibility (usually a female who lives in the same town) and the rest of the family might show up for a day or two and criticize or even try to "fix" things, then leave the family member to do what they've decided needs done.

I'll let you know when the site is up & running.

Thanks for the info on Veteranaid Ellie. My grandfather was a veteran of the Korean War, so I will have to check on this.
My wifes grandfather was a veteran of WWII and he just passed away last year also.

Not so much a question, but I am trying to design a toilet approach that allows someone with walking issues to sit down without having to turn around first. I find it crazy that one approaches the front of the toilet and then has to turn 180 degrees to use it. For those with walkers and balance issues, that seems like an accident waiting to happen. Perhaps a solutions section on your friends website would be appropriate.

It's a great resource for vets & their widows who require assistance to maintain their independenc, as long as the veteran served at least 90 days, one day of which had to have been during a war.
