I'm still trying to reconcile those numbers with Apple's 10-Q (PDF alert) filing.
For the three months ending Dec 31, 2011 Apple breaks down unit sales like this:
Mac Desktop 1,479
Mac Portable 3,719
iPhone 37,044
iPad 15,434
Welcome to the post-PC era.
PS - And once again Apple hits it out of the park with the screen on iPad3. For heavens sake, iPad2 couldn't even do native 720p. Shazam. We'll give you 1080p and then some.
EDIT: as Kevin points out below, the Apple numbers are global sales figures. For comparison, Worldwide PC Shipments, Fourth Quarter 2011 (Preliminary) 92,702 (this is the 6 to 1 PC-to-iPad ratio TPB refers to in the Title of the OP)

I don't know where y'all work. Where I work there's a theoretical 3-year replacement cycle on computers. In fact, they are not automatically replaced every 3 years, but rather only when someone pushes for new stuff. Plenty that are 5+ years old now.

Comparing global figures to US only figures is a great way to draw terrible conclusions.
What I'm pretty surprised by is that at this point nobody else has figured out what Apple did. Amazon is on the right track, but they've got a few generations to go before they can really make an impact (and they'll ultimately need to have their own platform rather than building on android).

A lot of companies are leasing equipment from vendors meaning they don't have to "buy" these laptops/desktops. I am sure the price of the lease dictates how old the equipment can be.
