There is a consistent pattern on AM radio and online forums of blaming "the liberals" for pretty much everything, even contradictory things, and never giving them credit for doing anything right.
Hate for "liberals" goes right back to elementary school. It's actually the exact same hate that the kids in the back of the class, who didn't understand the material, got bad grades, and couldn't spell, had for the kids in the front of the class, who did understand the material, got good grades, and could spell. Teacher smiled at those kids in the front, but didn't smile at the kids in the back.
It's also the story of Cain and Abel. Cain killed Abel for being better loved by God, making a better sacrifice, yada yada. And it's the story of Joseph being thrown into the well, then sold into slavery by his brothers, because his father Jacob loved him best.
I'm trying to say that this hate for "the liberals" is old. Very very old. It's not actually about liberals at all. It's about feeling left behind, unwanted, inferior.
It's at the forefront of politics now because middle and lower-middle class white men, who used to be assured of at least not being on the bottom, now find themselves unemployed, as the 0.1% ships their jobs to China. And maybe they're foreclosed on now too (again by the 0.1%), bankrupted by ridiculous medical bills (again by the 0.1%). Then they look upward, and to top it all off, the president is black.
The kids who were in the front of the class, who could spell, and who the teacher smiled at, those kids are doing pretty well. Their jobs weren't outsourced.
And so the frustrated white middle-American male says lots of angry and not-quite-coherent things on the radio and on forums, like this:
Obama still sucks ass...
From http://patrick.net/forum/?p=1210015
You want to be sympathetic to them because you know about their frustrations, but they make themselves so ugly and unlikable that it's just not possible.

It was Alan Greenspan that said, "to exist you need an ideology...the question is whether it is accurate or not." The context was a hearing over the whole financial meltdown in '08.
I don't think it's just conservatives who use simplifying ideologies to understand the world. I think most people do. It's probably a necessity to some extent.
Maybe it's just that "liberals" are more willing to change their ideology when new facts are encountered? It does seem like far-right conservatives tend to block out facts that don't fit their pre-existing ideology. Take the whole "Birther" movement for example.

I think there is definitely an argument to be made that people will tend to form ideologies to simplify complex issues as a coping measure, much the same way they also will tend to judge people based on first impressions.
Neither of these things are good are however, since they tend to cause people to jump to quick, easy, and usually wrong conclusions. As much as possible people should be focused on the points and policies rather than the ideologies since this will (eventually) give them more understanding of the issues which will inherently improve their judgement.

Patrick :
All you have done with your original post is label yourself.
'Liberal'
'Conservative'
News flash - neither side understands ANYTHING about themselves nor their opponents - you just stick yourselves in a box, and then anyone who doesnt fit in YOUR box you label as a nasty, clueless idiot.
Meanwhile we slide into collapse with both sides screaming at the other that 'It's all YOUR fault !'
There is a need in society for BOTH types of people, those that are cautious and conservative protect what we have already accomplished, while those that are daring and liberal help us create and integrate new ways of thinking/doing.
There is a middle ground there, believe it or not - but instead of acknowledging that your side might not be always 100 percent correct, we find ourselves in a society that just wants to scream at each other and point fingers as we hurtle over the cliff.
If you do not find some middle ground, the universe/God will be more than happy to solve all our problems for us.
But I bet you're really not going to like the end result.

And this is the province of "liberals"? There's a long list of conservatives who believe that they are superior to the "unwashed masses". A recent example of it was the Bush White House that publicly courted the Evangelicals meanwhile behind their backs were making jokes about them. Oh wait, you mean the difference is whether you PUBLICLY show your arrogance and laugh right in someone's face? OK got it.

I agree somewhat with your analysis. THere are some right wingers that totally fit that description. Just angry on a deep level.
Also, the analysis on the TED video was more about traditional left versus right, where as the current right includes a few groups, including fundies, and the general haters of all that smacks of elitism. They need these people to win elections.
On the left you have this type Dan8267 says
Which I want to agree with, but it's too polarizing. IF we are ever going to function then we have to avoid the hate on both sides. Hate the system not the players.
And I do know some very smart conservatives, who at this point are sticking by their team, because that's what we humans tend to do.

Yet here, Laertes! Aboard, aboard for shame!
The wind sits in the shoulder of your sail,
And you are stay'd for.
There ... my blessing with thee!
And these few precepts in thy memory
Look thou character. Give thy thoughts no tongue,
Nor any unproportion'd thought his act.
Be thou familiar, but by no means vulgar.
Those friends thou hast, and their adoption tried,
Grapple them to thy soul with hoops of steel;
But do not dull thy palm with entertainment
Of each new-hatch'd, unfledg’d comrade. Beware
Of entrance to a quarrel but, being in,
Bear't that th' opposed may beware of thee.
Give every man thy ear, but few thy voice;
Take each man's censure, but reserve thy judgement.
Costly thy habit as thy purse can buy,
But not express'd in fancy; rich, not gaudy;
For the apparel oft proclaims the man;
And they in France of the best rank and station
Are of a most select and generous chief in that.
Neither a borrower, nor a lender be;
For loan oft loses both itself and friend,
And borrowing dulls the edge of husbandry.
This above all: to thine own self be true,
And it must follow, as the night the day,
Thou canst not then be false to any man.
Farewell; my blessing season this in thee!

Everybody else is just green,
It's a helluva start,
It could be made into a monster
If we all pull together as a team.
And did we tell you the name of the game, boy?
We call it Riding the Gravy Train.
I bought a bag of Mozzerlla sticks the other day. Out of the dairy case. I opened the bag. They looked like fucking dog biscuts.
You start looking at the stuff in the grocery store. Then you wonder and being to understand. All that stuff in there is the same. As the stuff in their "competitors store" up the street. WTF. "Bertollini Linguini and Shrimp Scampi." Didn't I just see this in the other fucking store? I like Italian food very much. Its not restaraunt by any means. They just throw some crap in a bag. Put a sticker on it. Then you begin to get. They are feeding the herd. Its all the same GD stuff in every fucking store in America. Same stove top, same canned goods, same potato chips, same pizzas, same waffles, same everything. There is no variance. They could care fucking less if you get bored with the food. Just go home and "slop" yourself and get back to work in the morning.
People don't see all of this as being connected. They don't understand fractional lending. There is a decoupling of thought. When you don't understand fractional lending. Everyone thinks the "super rich" of the world pays attention to all of this shit. They don't. They play golf and fuck around a lot. They hire other people to do all of this. If it gets out of control and they build to many fucking Wal-marts, Chili's, Taco Bells and BP gas stations. So what. Don't bother me I'm going fishing. Just print some more. No out of business sign on Macy's or J.C. Penny for God's sakes who shops there. The mall is empty all week. Just ask any retail worker with sore feet. Just pump more cash in.
A mall is just a place to build more assets around. A great place to have businesses for the workers. Again. With that decoupling of thought. You might not think they "plan" all this stuff out they really do. Thats the same in every fucking suburb in America to. Then you look around and say hey these major cities are all the same to arranged in blocks. All filled with the same slop joints for the most part. Cause maybe the small guy just ain't dependable enough to stay in business. If our workers aren't slopped. They just might move away. If you can print all you want. There is no competition. However they will never turn their awesome lead on everyone else loose. Then when you see your all buying the same food at the grocery store and going to the same places for lunch when the same whistle blows at the same time. That you all go into work at the same time and leave at the same time. You suddenly realize. I'm in a fucking herd here. That you are being herded back and forth to work. Thats movement of course. The herd gets to watch TV at night. Which is all pretty much the same stuff in America. Which wouldn't be sad except for the fact your all taught to think the same way. Go into work at the "same time" so you can all work at putting their stuff together. Ask yourself about the uniformity in that and "Who" made that call to have everyone at work in America at the same time. It wasn't Jesus.
When you really get to the "bottom line". You may now understand you get "paper". The guys that print it get "Assets". Virtually everyone gets a 30 year mortgage. 30 years of your life. For a house thrown up in 3 months. Putting those assets together for them. For fucking paper. Paper that is measured not in worth but time. What do you wind up with. A house that took only 3 months to build and 3/4 of an acre for the most part. Your getting screwed really badly on your labor. Getting very little in asset for your work. Get smart. It may not be a tenement. However its not your house either. Its theirs till you get it paid and you better work hard at putting things together for them or that house will be taken out from under you.

This is one of my favorite songs. It used to make me sick to my stomach. The only thing that saves it from the dumpster is the "little pink houses line" and the poor ole black guy Give it a listen.
Hey have to feed the kids. You know what fuck the bastards that have you good. Put it together. Go in do what I did threaten to beat your boss senseless with a board. If he trys to make you look like a stupid fool again. Walk out. You ain't stuck. They just make you think you are.
Thats what I did to. I took 25 thousand dollars out of there one night. He was stupid enough to give me a key. Hey, he stole from me before or tried. I used to catch him at it all the time. So I figured WTF. No one ever figured out it was missing I guess. It was raining hard the night I took it. As I scurried out the door. I looked up at the sky and said "Fuckin' eh God, I have had it with this shit. Time to start living". "Goodbye you greasy looking noodle eating fuck." I thought to myself. I'm goin sizzlin'. When I want. Not when you say so.
I know Sherriff doughnut holes would be shocked. Knowing I'm an innocent man by his estimations. It was a nice start. He wanted to shut my little profit center down. I didn't take to that of course. Thats another story. Life is good. I got it all. Take it easy all day. It may not be your "move". But it sure was a start to make life "swell" for me.
Know what It wasn't the 25k that did it all. Not at all. Its just paper thats all it goes very quickly. Not an asset. Assets stay and don't go quickly. Take the big screen thats just a circut board for 700 dollars. Thats labor for something made for very little and and sells at a "fixed price". "Fixed price means you can't get it for near what the cost to make it was. Which equals them getting a lot of labor out of you (even more if you revolve) for the labor which got very little to make it if it wasn't just a machine. Now go to the grocery store and look at all the fixed prices. Even at the different grocery "CHAIN" stores. You wonder. Well hell I can't do that make food like they do. The answer: You do make it for them. Its your labor once again for paper.
What it really was all about. Was just not being someone elses "boy" anymore. I liked the people I worked with of course. Most of them anyway. Some of them were getting screwed good of course. Taking it all in a trusting nature. I just don't have that nature. I never really did. I have one life and really Big Dreams. I am really a nice person. I wouldn't do that to you of course. I just don't like seeing the everyday guy herded, lied to, manipulated, treated like shit. All of their time to relax and do it their way taken from them.
Not many of you want to put your "kids" on the same track your on. In debt straining to make it all work. Putting together assets for someone else. I can see that. Don't let them trap you with that bullshit. It's really the debt that keeps you in line and you "listen up" when they call. Never forget that. If your going to do something. Do it for yourself not someone else. Your family is no ones business.
So do I feel remorse. Well lets see. I am being swindeled every fucking day of my life with paper. It cheapens MY assets. My assets have unestimable worth. You might not think I take that seriously. I do. The paper itself is made out of wonderful stuff. So I am not denegrating that in of itself. For assets use what makes sense. Stuff that lasts. Stuff that was ment to be used. Then you can get off the treadmill.
So we have two choice. We can all converge on the people that print the paper and "get them". Or the everyday guy can gain some sanity by persuasion and just walk away. How does an ant dismantle an ant farm? Thats the two choices. I think it just might take something "larger" to bring all party's together and solve this in a safe, calm, workable way. Good day.

I"ve been bitching about that for years. And that frozen and processed crap on the shelf, is where their margin is. They can afford to throw away tons of fresh meat and produce, a year, because they make such good money on the Purina Human Chow isles. They aren't actually selling a $15 6 oz ny strip. It's the decoy.
Talk about the same crap, the same goes for consumer goods, I had a Russian tell me, that they had more choices for goods in Russia in the 80's than we have now.

In that case, I guess our GDP which is consumption based is totally fiction. With all the money that we spend on consumption, just think of the money that could be made selling people the good stuff that they really want. Some smart entrepreneur should think of that !!

There is no margin to some. Its labor. To you and I their is a margin because we deal of course in some assets. However are stuck in dealing in paper. I bought a 14 dollar "rib eye". The other day of course I looked at the "price". I wanted to say "hey Mr. Butcher. What can you give me this for?" Well whats the point its "fixed pricing". That alone would "set you free". If it wasn't "fixed pricing". Don't give me this free market bullshit. Finanical news always says drills that in. Its anything but "free market". They aren't going to do anything that stupid. Like letting people negotiate prices in a grocery store or anything like that. You would actually win in that scenario. They know that. After all it that would be a shame and a financial "sin" to hurt Mr. Big that badly and get yourself a deal. No, they want to give you "poop on a cracker" for a lot of labor. That right there shows you who "owns" those grocery "chains". Sit and wonder WTF while the "little woman" clips coupons and thinks its a big day
You know just like I do Mr.Baughb. What happens when you can deal in something that isn't "fixed pricing". Life gets really good with a lot of relaxation and free time to yourself. You just like me sit and wonder WTF is wrong with these people. What the hell are they doing?

Live through industrial danger. Traverse traffic and do other heroic deeds. Something is after Banzai. He just can't figure out what the fuck it is. No ones giving him any clues. So hes kind of blank in that department. For someone thats living a normal life. Its scary so be forewarned.

I didn't say anything about consumption. I'm talking about going to Store A because they only sell Widget A made by Corporation X, and Store B deals exclusive in Widget B made by Corporation Y and Z, and if you want Company M products you can only get those at Store K. Widget A were the cheapest, and Widget B can be a little pricier, but they aren't Made by Company M, but Company M doesn't make this product.
Now it's not a question of what you buy, but where you will buy it.
There's two to three models that are identical, made by three companies, and every store caries all three model. And chances are great, that the last generation of the products were actually better made. All of the products are of the same quality, and most of the parts are built by the same Chinese manufacture regardless of the brand.
Russia still makes superior electronics than the rest of the world.
That is if you consider analog tube electronics Superior to digital transistors, and integrated circuitry.

Patrick, right there you're telling me you've never lived in a southern state for any length of time.
It's NOT the United States of California!
I spent ten years in the Dallas suburbs. Down there it would be YOU on the outside looking in with your nose pressed against the glass. Not us. It's increasingly the same way in Ohio although they're not as affluent these days as they were in the fifties and early to mid sixties.
We really are two separate nations. I'm convinced of it.

OK, I'd like to hear you expand on this. What specific comment of Patrick are you referencing?
I lived in Georgia for about 34 years. So I have some perspective on the area as well. Yes I think people really don't "get" each other and value each other enough, but the ratcheting of political tensions work both ways. How can you NOT respond to bile and hatred, with bile and ridicule? Maybe the Amish can master that but I cannot.
Californians IMO do have a smug superior "we are the center of the Universe why would you want to live elsewhere" just like New Yorkers. On the other hand, there's some validity in thinking that. California submits more in Federal revenues than it gets back, so there's no question that the rest of the country thinking it is "carrying" California deadbeats is a load of BS. It's widespread and it's plainly WRONG. If you talk about hoping Texans would get smited by a natural disaster you are a monster, but if you wish loudly that California would get shaked&baked 9 times out of 10 you get "hehe yeah that'd be cool..."

It really is key though. How to be more Jesus-like or Buddha-like in dealing with people who hate you?
It requires understanding of what truly motivates their bile and ridicule, and that is hard to achieve. It's hard because the stated reasons for their hate are rarely their real reasons. It requires reading between the lines. Most people don't even try.
But if you can get to that understanding, and calmly and sympathetically answer people who are slandering you, understanding their real concerns, that's very powerful at changing minds.

An idea for a "reality" tv show that I might actually watch:
Take a college student enrolled at Berkely that was raised in the Bay Area and have them attend a Bible College in the Midwest. And visa versa.
Or maybe that would just be cruel. I guess it wouldn't be any worse than some Japanese game shows. ;-)

Patrick, you've treated me really well since I've been here but this is more wishful thinking than anything else. It's something I see quite frequently among liberals. The book tells you something and the educrat confirms it, therefore it must be true...but it frequently is not. In my experience, it's something that drives liberals absolutely insane.
My best friend from the eighties (in Ohio) was valedictorian of his high school class. Today, he lives with his parents and hasn't had a permanent job in ten years. He will work sustenance level jobs until he dies and his health isn't very good. His parents were very highly regarded in the local community: mother was a teacher, father a chemical engineer. His two brothers aren't doing much better and I think it has a lot to do with their mother. Arleen makes me look laid back. Jim's been married to her for so long that I think he's just used to it.
My wife and I graduated in the middle of our high school class, have three cars that are paid for and just bought a home in one of the nicer suburbs in the country. My parents were from the school of hard knocks, which I had a degree in long before I got to college. Their stories and my grandparents' stories and the old couple down the street's stories about the Depression and World War II and "what really happens out there" were backed up by college classes and overall, I've done okay. The few doctors and lawyers we graduated are making more than I do but on balance, I'm basically satisfied...but if you want to contribute to the fund to pay for my instrument rating, feel free.

Yes, I've been tuning out most of the Fox stuff lately. It's getting very predictable. That's the real reason Napolitano's show was canceled. Stossel will be next. Gerry Rivers (Geraldo) isn't worth watching, never has been. He and Springer are kindred spirits.
One of two things will happen to MSNBC. They'll undergo another format change or Comcast will simply shut them down. They have to be a drag on NBC Universal's corporate bottom line. I read somewhere that Steve Burke (Comcast's top guy and head of NBC Universal) issued a new org chart after the acquisition was completed and it didn't have Phil Griffin's name on it. That, combined with MSNBC's continued poor performance in the ratings doesn't bode well for his future. They may be in negotiations to buy the contracts out and simply shut it down but not until after the election. They're not gonna leave it as it is. Comcast is getting financially raped, every month MSNBC remains on the air.
I remember when Donahue was on MSNBC. I read his book years ago, don't care for his politics but he was smart enough to marry Marlo. She's an amazing woman...gorgeous and completely nuts. She and Phil have been married since 1980. I guess it works for him.
I haven't listened to Rush in years. He changed after losing his hearing. I once had aspirations of becoming a sound engineer because I have very good hearing, and there's a real difference between Rush before and after that happened to him. He's not the same, not even close.
I like Bill Bennett, Hugh Hewitt and Dennis Prager, none of whom are on the air up here. When I drove to San Diego for flight training two years ago, I was able to pick up KRLA about an hour after I jumped on the five freeway and listened to it all the way to El Cajon. That's about seven hours.

I just WISH there was a haven where we could go an listen to on radio or TV. I'm telling you there isn't. You find one radio or TV program and you think at last. Someone you can get some truth from. Then you find out after listening to that radio or TV progam you like, you discover something just isn't quite right with what your listening to. You guys know what I'm saying.
I've got a station for you its called PATRICK.NET. When we through things out it dosen't divide the whole people of the country turning everything into a national argument with much disagreement. Hey we have differences. Thing is it dosen't turn into that here. On a massive scale disagreement turns into the ridiculous. Trying to get 80 million people to agree on something Holy snikeys.
Take a Bill Maher. This is example only. I'm ok with Bill. Except for this. Turning what is fact into a disagreement. Why just pound on Religious people. You bring it up on a program with that many viewers. Well hey guess what the religious people are watching that to. They are going to jump in somewhere else. Not them themselves. Probably more likely Bills counterparts Rush or O'Reilly get it all revved up
The innocence of some says hey. The guys that program shows like Limbaugh and all the rest. They aren't deliberatly mixing it up. They are.
They know what they did with Religion. How it was all made up. They make shit up everyday for their programming telling them what to put on. Simply they talk about what is the all the same news on anything the "Debt merchant owned news". Puts out. They know what the facts are. They even have the proof of it all. Save us all the GD pain. Spare us all the sillyness of what religous people particpate in. Just get rid of it. Rush knows its bullshit. So does Bill. So do most of the people that are elevated to talk to people nationwide. Those guys aren't stupid. They are very hip. I'm not fooled to think otherwise. Truth is all the way around all parties considered, they "use" religion. It is foundational to either pacify, to establish obiedence to authority, or incite. People that have been "incited against" understand. They are never going to get "rid" of it. It is way to useful.
It's fun to be on a team. I have been on several. However as a mature adult. I don't find them interesting anymore. Another words. I don't have time to be fooled with bullshit.
Back to the best "program" ever on. Patrick.net. People here say what they want. For the most part. Some are afraid to say things right out. I'M STILL HERE. So don't be. I don't see a lot of "nitpicking". Which I really love. However I am still working on complete sentences. I have found when you walk into a culture that has been ostracized like say the "black culture". You wind up with people that really get to find out whats going on. The "unfair" part of everything they experince. Tends to make them look at all of the "facts" to find out what the hell is real and what isn't. Another words. You get the low down on whats happening or "Something ain't right about all of this." People (IF they have both feet "on the ground". I'm not including religous sky pilots in this) that have people after them or they are the subject of some debate or persecution for no good reason at all. Tend to be a little more suspicious about whats really going on.
So you think I'm going to Bill or Rush to get anything thats half-way honest or anything thats going to help me through life. Your drinking potato juice. I know who pays those guys. The guys that are paying them are trying to "screw me". Thats reality. I've seen guy that you might have thought were dire enemies just slobbering all over each other in Bill and Rushs rhelm. You have seen that kind of thing to. You sit and wonder WTF. So for me it boils down to more like who gives them the "paper" to go get their food and put gas in their car and have a roof over their little minds.
Contrast that with Patrick.net. You people don't want anything from me for the most part. We are just everyday people raging in some cases at the people that are really trying to screw us over. Patrick has hung with us. Hasn't sold out to those bastards. I'd like to thank him for that. Patrick and most of the people that are here are ok. I'm not pandering either. This is a really good place to get some good facts and some hard truth.
Don't EVER be fooled by the wolf. Take a look at who's feeding them.

This is way to subtle for me and commercial. Why sit and make fun of it? Religion get rid of it. Everyones sick of tripping over the bullshit. Deal is sit and rock in your car back and forth. Try to make the following work. Hey maybe something like this song is the combining force. That brings division together to stop the war. Stop unreasonable aggression against people that don't even know you for Christ's sake.
Well who's in charge up there. Or who do we put in charge? Does it fucking matter? Common fucking sense tells you. Like it does everyone else. You don't stir up total strangers. Piss them off for no good reason. Because you don't like the way they live. WHY even bring up something like blacks? If you didn't you know fucking good and well "the problem" (which they do treat such people LIKE THEY ARE A FUCKING PROBLEM) would go away. We know good and well they never "taught" us anything. Its just simply nature. Yet they grab onto that like its grail and flaunt it all over the fucking world. Yes we invade BUT JUST LOOKIE at who I'm scratching behind the ears and rubbing their bellies. So you just gotsta figure. If they didn't that population "blacks" which fucking dwarfs China just might get a little pissed off and start biting off their little plastic heads. So do you get a lil pacification? A lil stroking? Words (thats all it is) that makes you just love a good ole boy? Of course you do.
So a song like the following done in the 60s served no use but to pacify. Once again look at who did the song. The division offsets it. They can "choose" any division they wish. Calling it "democracy".
