But that's not the worst of it.
I did an online reverse look up, and the number resolves to
The 229-208 exchange is serviced by the following companies within the BAINBRIDGE ratecenter.
BELLSOUTH TELECOMM INC DBA SOUTHERN BELL TEL
Calls are routed via OCN 9417 on a Northern Telecom DMS100 (Digital) Host switch located in the Bainbridge, Georgia area.
So I look on the AT&T website for a phone number, they do not one single number listed anywhere on their support web page, that should have been the first clue.
So call 1800 CALL ATT the only number i can find on the internet. This number has an automated menu system that is hell bent on autonomously selling me LD calling cards. I finally found a section for new service, and that menu takes to another menu section, that demanded to know about the AT&T number I was calling about. (This is the new service section mind you). It is asking me for the number I am calling about, and I keep saying "new service" this loop went on for about two minutes, then finally said, it would transfer me now.
I finally get a lady in India, and I tell her the story about the spam robo caller that has been calling me for the past few days, and then the rigermarol I went through to get her on the line. I then heard a third person on the line guffaw. She apologizes, and I asked her, if she's apologizing for my situation or the person laughing at it? She said both.
She tells me there's nothing she can do, did I want her to transfer me to the annoyance department, I said sure, but can you give me the name of the person that thinks this is funny. She then tried to play like she didn't hear anyone laugh.
Thanks for reminding me, why I dumped Uverse and ATT Broadband, now I remember why the Shitty Comcast service, I have now, is so much better than AT&T's even shittier no "NON EXISTING" customer service. This is also why I have never jumped on the iPhone band wagon, because I don't want AT&T wireless, and their other carriers are just as bad.
Thanks AT&T only you could put it all in perspective, only you make an under dog company like Metro PCS a viable option over your and other senior bell companies, and only you can make a shitty company like Comcast seem like a moniker of excellence. Thank you AT&T.

I hate traditional landlines - all you get is harassing robocalls, spam, telemarketers and scammeers - and I paid up to $45+ a month for this. I was getting up to 15 + bogus calls per day, and often times they would just hang up. I tried placing my number on the Do Not Call registry - but the calls just increased. I finally took matters into my own hands - I transfered my number over to Google Voice, which allows you to block ANY caller with a "number not in service message". You can also mark calls as spam which then logs the number into the Google Voice Global Spam Filter. The frequency of calls stopped - and any time I do get a bogus call - after blocking it that caller never comes through again - problem solved.... This service can also be set up for a mobile phone...

I've been out of the USA for many years, so please forgive my ignorance, but why does anyone have a landline at all?
It's not like there are special area codes for cell phones (there probably should be, though), so when you give out your number, nobody knows that you don't have a landline.
Or do mobile phone providers still charge you to receive phone calls? In that case I could see not wanting to get even a single unwanted call.

Travis Bickle says
This was a call to my cell phone.
I haven't had a land line in years. For the same reasons stated above.
