The goal is to imprison as many people as possible. It's hard to meet that goal if you limit yourself to imprisoning just the guilty. Innocent people are just as profitable to imprison.
Yes, your government does knowingly imprison innocent people

The goal is reelection of district attorneys and to make chiefs of police look good. Anything goes to make the numbers is a frequent result. All of these problems have been know to exist in the police/court system which is, in theory public information, for a very long time.
Anyone care to guess what's going on in homeland security where absolutely everything is top secret? I bet they're making their numbers also.

If you cant do the time.. dont do the crime.
If you hang around gangsters .. you will eventually fall into that lifestyle and will find yourself in jail....

Your innocence is not important whatsoever; only the DA's conviction rates matter. After all, he'll prolly become some big politician someday.

when you have someone with MS-13 or Latin Kings tats all over their body, and admit to doing a hit with "no regrets", DA conviction rates dont matter much...

The point, idiot, is that they didn't do the crime.

Bingo.
Here's how Justice is supposed to work:
Authorities hear about a potential crime, investigate the allegations and suspects, and prosecute.
Here's how "Just Us" works in modern America:
Authorities identify an individual or segment of the population they wish to go after. They investigate their targets until they find something --- anything -- on the targets to charge them with, and then prosecute.

When innocent people are put to death or spend their lives in prison while DA's withhold evidence or knowingly encourage the police to lie do conviction rates matter?
Ever hear of Rubin Hurricane Carter? After spending 20 years getting his case out of the NJ court system, which fought tooth and nail to avoid the case being looked at by a federal judge, it took about 10 minutes for a federal judge to throw the conviction out and release Carter noting that the prosecution had been "predicated upon an appeal to racism rather than reason, and concealment rather than disclosure,". There are thousands more out there. What is even worse is the real criminals are still walking around while DA's are patting themselves on the back for getting a conviction, any conviction, on their watch.

Whoops hit submit by accident.
Even worse is once DA's are presented with evidence a conviction is possibly wrongful most go crazy defending it or covering it up. Look at the whole FBI crime lab scandal. There are thousands of cases decided on bad lab work. The FBI lab was just making up results in many cases.
The justice department (oxymoron) only did a very cursory investigation into the FBI lab at best. Just enough to keep the political heat and public outcry under control. Then they sent the results they did find to the prosecuting DA's but not to the defendants. So how many DA's alerted the the defendants or the defendants lawyers that testimony critical to conviction was based on bad lab work. Not very many.

Yes sir. How about the Robo-signing, Linda Green stuff? There is more than enough evidence to win a conviction, just on what documents are out there for the public to see.
Instead, we're seeing State and Federal Attorneys go for a settlement that will end up in a wrist slap.

Yep, the actual criminals don't get prosecuted while the innocent do. Our government simply cannot bring itself to prosecute the executives of Fortune 500 companies. I'm just waiting for a corporation to start murdering people, not indirectly, but by shooting them. The government will still look the other way or just slap them on the wrist.
Oh shit, that already happened. Blackwater.
