My Struggle with the Interwebs

IE9 slowed my computer to a friggin' crawl. People with pens & paper were passing me on mopeds...

I loaded up Chrome and found these lovely words embedded in my brain: "Google Chrome is Not Responding..." It was faster to load, I could watch videos again, but the whole "not responding" thing was pissing me off.

I'm now using Firefox and so far it's responding. But IE9 is still loaded on my computer and tries to open up whenever it can. As a non-computer whiz, this really sucks & blows at the same time but I can't get it to uninstall. According to what I read online, it's possible to uninstall the executable file even tho I have Windows 7, I just can't figure out how.

If anyone out there can tell me how to do it without too many steps...

I could not even get IE9 to stay booted. It would just freeze.

Try hitting F1 for help while you are in Windows Explorer (thing that lets you look at files directories) and type into the help box 'default browser' and see if it gives you instructions on changing to FF so IE shuts up and sits down.

FF is my default browser, it's just that ie9 opens up at times. and it pisses me off. I'd like it to stop...

    1. Run regedit.
    2. Control+F to find "Browser Helper Objects". This should take you to the key HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Explorer\Browser Helper Objects
    3. Delete anything under the "Browser Helper Objects" key.

Browser Helper Objects (BHOs) are plugins for browsers, particularly I.E. They are almost exclusively used by spyware/malware and most anti-malware programs don't detect or remove them. Don't worry about tracking down all the other registries dealing with spyware. It's sufficient to eliminate the hooks.

On the remote, and I do mean remote, chance that you have a legitimate BHO that you intended to install and use, you can always just reinstall the software you want.

Personally, I recommend installing Windows on a small 10-20 GB partition and backing that partition up after a clean install of the OS and key applications. That way you can revert to a clean OS partition after a year of clutter accumulates from various installs/uninstalls. It keeps your computer running lightning fast.
