because they fail to understand that in order for a marriage to be valid the participants must be legally recognized as legally able to provide consent.
trees, animals, and minors (in most cases) can't legally consent to marriage.
and personally I have no objection to siblings marrying or kids marrying their parents. state sanctioned marriage is all about financial and legal obligations and agreements. nothing more.

I'll grant you that the GOP was once a bold, innovative party on civil liberties. It was back when it was dominated by New England liberals.
The Democrats have never been the "conservative" party per se, but they were a populist party. Populism can be right or left, and the populists and the population at the time enjoyed their racism.
As stated above, the Southern Strategy was meant to breed racial resentment for the GOP's benefit. LBJ played into their hands by throwing his lot in with Black rights.
The soulless Republican party did what it always does, post-Lincoln--appealed to the lesser angels.

Fact: The south were also fiscally and socially conservative
Fact: These southerners didn't switch to the GOP because Republicans were campaigning to bring back Jim Crow in 1964, but rather; these southerners no longer had a reason to vote for the old segregationist regime in the Democratic party since the Democrats FINALLY evolved out of their racism.
I for one am happy that the Democrats were able to catch up with the Republicans and repudiate the Democrat's deplorable racist record. It took way too long though.....
I just will continue to call out the B.S. spouted by historically ignorant (or dishonest) Democrats claiming that the Republicans were campaigning in support of segregation like the Democrats were doing until they saw the light in the 1960's.

November will be a slaughter. I wonder what Jerry Brown is thinking right now, knowing how difficult passing a tax increase will be during a period of high unemployment and then seeing how politically unfriendly Congress is becoming to a state that's as blue as California.

Can you show me evidence all of the Republican politicians that were campaigning to bring back segregation during the civil rights movement or there after like the Southern Democrat politicians were doing until LBJ?
The racists in the south simply had no reason to vote for the Democrat party any longer once the Democrat party finally shed their segregationist politics.
Long before LBJ saw the light, Republican Presidents like Eisenhower was sending the National Guard troops to integrate schools against the wishes of racist Democrat politicians.
But dishonest liberals (and their dominance in academia) have managed to re-write history to project their disgusting legacy of racism on the Republican party.

Simply repeating "Southern Strategy" over and over again does not mean Republicans turned into the party of racists or supported Democrat policies of segregation.
The Republicans were just happy to have the votes especially since they didn't have to become like the racist Democrats of the 20th century to win the South's votes.
Again, I agree that many southern racists stopped voting for Democrats once the Democrat party officially shed its overt racist platforms of segregation under LBJ. These racists simply no longer had the reliable Democrat racist party and their policies to support, so some of them started voting on other issues like economics and foreign policy.

Seriously, just a few years ago the Democrats still had a former KKK member serving in the US Senate.
The biggest racist politicians over the last 150 years in the US were Democrats. Its not even close.
But in Liberal Bizarro world, the Republicans are the racist party because the Democrats finally got rid of their racist POLICIES and racists stopped voting for Democrats.

Yeah, I totally agree with this. For a majority of the past 150 years the South as been almost exclusively Democrats. Then in the 1960's all the biggest racist politicians decided that the Republican party supported their views better than the Democrats, and welcoming them with open arms the Republicans seem to have agreed.

This is not new information, nor rocket science. New England was once the home of the Republican Party, when that party was a much more liberal party.
The South was a reliably Democratic bastion. They are now reversed. Why?
RINOs no longer exist in New England...why?
Conservative Southern States no longer vote for Democrats, why?
Now, race is not the only issue that decides elections. But for racists it is, and that's why the Nixon folks embraced the Strategy. It is also why Reagan campaigned on State's Rights in Mississippi.
Lee Atwater regretted his hand in it; Ken Mehlman apologized for it on behalf of the RNC.
And Eisenhower was awesome, but he said aloud that his biggest regret was nominating the desegregating Warren to the bench.
Warren was a liberal.

I guess ultimately, even with his KKK background, Byrd turned out to be less of a bigot. At least according to the NAACP.
The best a Republican does on that list is Chris Smith of NJ at 67%.
Ultimately our entire country has a hugely racist past, both Democrat, Republican, etc.
50-60 years ago that started to slowly change. As that change happened a majority of the biggest racists (remember the guys and gals who were still pissed that Lincoln freed the slaves) found a home in the Republican party.

Further, the KKK morphed into the CCC, which is really an updated White Citizen's council.
Trent Lott, and other Republicans have visited with them. Stormfront and the CCC frequently have "articles" about how MLK, Abe Lincoln and others were awful and promote "white power".
They support the GOP exclusively. It is not fair to put a pox on both houses. The GOP carries the torch of right-wing extremists and racists.
The language has been updated to reflect the times. Now, it is State's Rights, heritage, welfare and whatnot.
The Democrats paid a political price for cutting these dead-enders loose. The GOP tried to sweep it under the rug when it was expedient to do so, but couldn't run from it. That's why the party owned up to it, even if the constituents won't.

Iwog - the rich landlord with high rents, makes a lot of unearned / rentier income comes here trying to adopt a populist tone and shift the idea that those on the top of the heap steal from the rest of the heap (just like the people they say they are at political odds with) - he thinks we will not put 2 and 2 together. Both "sides" want to use something as powerful as government so they can keep their favorable station in life. You don't see any middle class or poor folks in either party. Just land owning business owning barons using government to cement their stations in life. They want more for themselves and less for everyone else, and either party is smokescreen for that activity. Middle class parent here who needs to send a large part of my paycheck so that people with more than one home (while I have none) can drive the latest BMW.

The facts on the ground are that if you're a rich guy (or a college kid) you simply are going to have a very very difficult time getting laid AND being a republican. (they are considered jerks by poor hot chicks and 20 somethings which are the same thing really).
So of course I understand why Bill Maher joins PETA and brags about driving a prius - he gets waaaaaaay more hotter chicks than Rush Limbaugh (his republican polar opposite).
Thats how I sees it here in CA.

As I told someone else recently, you need to get on a plane and go to Columbus some weekend this September when Ohio State is playing at home. It's not an expensive trip...go to a football game, have a nice meal afterward (place called The Top has the best steak in central Ohio, they've been around for fifty years) and just talk to the kids who work in the restaurants and live in the area. You'll find out really damn quick just how much of a bubble California is.
