"In the U.S., white men carry the dumbest phones"(Hey CNN started it)

FORTUNE -- The move from so-called feature phones to smartphones continues apace.

As of March 2012, 50.4% of U.S. mobile subscribers owned smartphones, up from 47.8% in December 2011, according to a Nielsen survey released Monday. Google's (GOOG) Android was the most popular smartphone operating system (48.5%), while Apple (AAPL) was the No. 1 manufacturer (32%).

No surprises there.

It's when the data are broken down by sex and ethnicity that things get interesting. According to Nielsen:

67.3% of Asian Americans use a smartphone as their primary mobile handset, more than any other ethnic group.
Almost three out of five Hispanic mobile subscribers use smartphones
54.4% African-Americans own smartphones
More than half (50.9%) of female mobile subscribers carry smartphones, compared with 50.1% for men.
More than two out of three 25-34 year olds use smartphones.

Which leaves, I guess, older white men carrying around the bulk of the remaining dumb phones.

Huh. I read it again and I didn't see any mention of dumb people, or an implication that dumber people carry smart phones...or a suggestion that the three "other" ethnic groups are dumb. Maybe your bias got inserted when you typed the title to your message?

Well if you have no problem with the article than there's no problem with my statement. I didn't infer anything, I just asked why do dumb people carry smart phones. Now in context to the article you may infer your own conclusions.

In other news white men are less likely to kill others due to not paying attention in traffic.
White men are less likely to walk into a fountain in the Mall
White men are more likely to have a cool mancave where they have real big screen tv's, and vintage music gear, and an album collection along with a nice desk and nice computer set up they don't need virtualized on hand held toy they can't see with out causing accidents killing them selves or Others.

If white births are down while stupidity is up, then it would only make sense, that proportionately whites are getting smarter. As there are less dumb whites being born.

On a related note, thanks for making me feel ashamed of being white, CaptainShuddup. It's a very sobering experience.

Holy shit! Are you seriously suggesting that all minorities are dumb? I would not have believed that if I didn't read your post myself.

Damn, and from the title I thought you were stating that smart phones are used mainly for entertainment rather than productive uses and that bare-bones phones are used more for productivity. And that I would have agreed with for now, although I see smart phones becoming more popular for business use as the app market transitions from games to business apps. But damn, that title was misleading.

True, Apple makes its money off of dumb fanatics regardless of race. Apple is a religion. It will maintain 10-20% of the market and that share will overpay for everything. The rest of the market will go to Android and have a far better experience.

    Vicente says

What would this "far better" experience be?

Apple's business model has always been to lock-in users with proprietary hardware and software. This prevents users from switching to competitors. It also acts as a barrier for new users because they don't want to get locked in. This in turn keeps developers from adopting the platform.

The battle between Apple's IPhone and the Android platform mirrors the old battle between MAC and PC. Note that PC originally meant any "personal computer", i.e. microcomputer owned by an individual, but it came to mean all microcomputers (now called desktops/towers) that are based on the Intel x86 platform.

Well, the PC won over the MAC, an indisputable point since that all "MACs" are now PCs. In fact, the PC won over Apple many times. First, the Apple QE2 failed. Then Lisa failed. Then the first MACs based on a Motorola platform failed. Then the second MACs based on the PowerPC platform failed despite a young, hot Angelina Jolie saying that the PowerPC would change everything. Finally, Apple gave up and said let's make PCs and port our OS to that platform.

And it's a good thing they did. There's no way you could do video processing without the Intel MMX instruction set. There's also a lot of other things that made the PC a good platform.

But the fundamental reason the PC won over the MAC -- and I'm talking hardware, not the Windows/MAC OS war -- is that the PC was an open platform and the MAC was a closed platform. The fact is that open platforms almost always win over closed platforms. The closed platform will capture a small, loyal minority, but it sacrifices the masses by the very virtual of being closed.

Apple is following this same business model with the IPhone and IPad. Why don't those devices have USB ports? Why do they use proprietary connections instead? The properietary connections are not in any way better for the user. They simply force third party manufacturers to make devices that are "IPhone compatible" and thus not not compatible with any other device. That's why you see products like this one.

    http://www.frys.com/product/5885443

This product should work with all smart phones and MP3 players, not just Apple products. It doesn't because fundamentally Apple doesn't want compatibility. It wants lock in. That has always been its business strategy.

And that strategy is bad for the end user. And it's why you will get more apps, better apps, more innovation, and a larger user base on the Android platform. And the user base in itself is a huge advantage. Facebook is popular only because it is popular, and it is valuable only because it is popular.

I expect IPhones to maintain 10-20% of the market, Android to maintain 80-90% of the market, and there to be trace amounts of other smart phone solutions.

Microsoft had a window of opportunity to break into the smart phone market, but they failed to move and instead concentrated on servers, which is fair enough. I always preferred Palm OS to Windows CE back in those days anyway. And Microsoft has a big enough fight with Linux on the server side anyway.

Anyway, if you want to talk about ethnicity and education -- and there certainly is a discrepancy there -- then let's put some facts into the conversation. From http://www.air.org/files/AIR-NCESracial_stats__trends1.pdf

So you see, Asians perform consistently better than whites academically. Personally, I'm one to attribute this and the other racial differences to several things:

    1. Poverty
    2. Cultural differences. Asian parents push their kids more to achieve academic goals.
    3. There are very few red-neck Asians dragging down academic scores. If we discounted red states where they think evolution is made up and the Bible accurately describes the age and history of the world, then whites might actually outperform Asians. Reading and book learning are liberal, socialist agendas.

It's right there in the link title, "White men carry the dumbest phones"

I stand by what I said, dumb people carry smartphones.

And that's precisely where you went wrong.

Step 1: CNN says White men carry the dumbest phones.
Step 2: You read this as Smart men carry the dumbest phones.
Step 3: You conclude that dumb men carry smart phones, which would be OK if not for the fact that step 2 is all fucked up.
Step 4: You conclude that since minorities carry smart phones, they are dumb.

Can you see where you went wrong? Hint: it's step 2.

White men carry the dumbest phones does not imply that smart people use dumb phones or that .

Hence, your conclusion, "I stand by what I said, dumb people carry smartphones." is utterly unfounded. Now, I haven't disproved that dumb people make up the majority of smart phone users, and in fact, for all I know that's true. However, your line of reasoning is erroneous at best and possibly racially motivated.

In contrast, the evidence I brought up above, which clearly shows that Hispanics and African Americans perform worse in high school is based on impartial, scientific studies and do not reflect any opinion I hold of groups. I didn't get data on college, but it's common knowledge that African Americans are less likely to go to college.

Furthermore, my analysis concentrates on causes and solutions rather than implying that one race is inherently better than others. Can you see the difference?

Acknowledging the poor academic performance of African Americans is a good thing. The first step to solving a problem is acknowledging its existence. But I don't get that's what you are going for.

Perhaps your goal was to make CNN out to be racist. But there is nothing in the CNN article that even hints of racism. CNN only reported the smart phone market penetration by ethnicity, a fact that would be very interesting to marketers but few others. CNN did not even comment on the intelligence of the smart phone users.

    You're thinking of Metro apps.

In my opinion, the fundamental problem with Windows CE is that it tried to turn smart phones into PCs and they are not. People use hand-held devices different from desktop systems. It's just a fundamentally different form factor and user experience.

I think that Microsoft is making this same mistake in reverse by trying to turn desktops into smart phones with Metro apps and Windows 8.

When I want to use Word, I always want a desktop system or tablet connected to an external keyboard, monitor, and mouse. I never want to those types of apps on a hand-held device. And I don't want to run hand-held apps on a desktop system.

You appologist extrapolated all of the other bullshit, because you like race baiting. I bet you get it from your smart phone.
Is there a race baiting app?

Race baiting does exist. However, the right uses the existence of race baiting to refute all real forms of racism. Both race baiting and racism are wrong. In fact, they are both forms of racism.

However, when the FBI tried to character assassinate Martin Luther King Jr. by revealing his extramarital affair -- something that's completely irrelevant to the civil rights movement -- they were simply racists trying to stop equality under law for all people regardless of race. To call anyone who points this out as a race baiter is simply a lie.

This "race baiting" bullshit response from the right whenever the topic of racism comes up is the ultimate extreme of the No True Scotsman fallacy. The fact is that you took an article that in no way shape or form says "blacks and hispanics are dumb" and twisted it to mean exactly that. It should not surprise you that a person with common sense might be suspicious that racial bias might have influenced your thinking on this one. It's actually quite a reasonable conclusion.

Now, I'm not saying your KKK racist. After all, almost all evils can be throttled. There are degrees of racism from

    1. Genocide
    2. Slavery
    3. KKK
    4. Jim Crow laws
    5. Segregation
    6. Hate speech
    7. Silently condoning racism
    8. Irrational xenophobia (ex: a black family moves into the neighborhood and you get nervous)

Clearly #8 is no where the same thing as #1. Your post might rank a 7. It's a minor form of racism, but one that should be countered with education and particularly understanding how to research and draw proper conclusions.

Even though #8 is very minor and not even necessarily a conscious thought, it's important to try to resist this tendency. After all, George Zimmerman killed Travon Martin because of #8.

I mean hell if you're going to think I was being racist for my inclusionary remarks then the same principal should hold true for your exclusionary assertion.

It sure seems dumb to me to hold a device that takes two hands, and your undivided attention, to text or tweet while your driving or walking. Then there's the Facebook or Tweets that does smart phone users in, politically, or gets them fired. Then let's not forget the picture of the neither regions that some smart phone users have felt compelled to send out at the expense of a sexual predator charge.

No I feel good at my initial claim that dumb people carry smart phones and there's ample data to back my claim with out you getting all Daniel Carver on me.

    CaptainShuddup says

    Why are you being racist?

I know that you've heard that the best defense is a good offense, but that cliché isn't always true. Calling someone else racist does not make you look less racist. In fact, it makes you look more racist because you are clearly being defensive. This is particularly true when people can read what you and other person wrote on an open forum.

The best face-saving move you can make right now is to say something like
You're right. I totally misinterpreted the article. I realize that now and retract my statement.

Short, simple, and to the point. Never double-down on stupidity, racism, or other clearly indefensible positions.

    CaptainShuddup says

By your own admission or should I say omission you are claiming your self that Indians and Asians are smarter than blacks and Hispanics.

Not even close. I presented evidence from a reputable source that measured the academic performance of several ethnic groups. You are incorrect in a number of ways.

    1. I did not make any claim. I reported facts.
    2. I did not seek out specific facts that upheld my own view. I simply sought a reputable source and reported whatever facts that source presented. I had no idea what the results were going to be when I did that.
    3. The facts that I presented relate to academic performance not intelligence.
    4. I explicitly stated that I believed the difference in academic performance were due to several factors not related to intelligence or genetics.

You have simply tried to twist my words in the same way you tried to twist CNN's article. This does not bode well for your position.

By the way, what exactly is your position? It started out that minorities are dumb. Then it was CNN is racist. Then it was racism doesn't exist and every instance of racism is just race baiting. Now it's that the rational guy introducing facts is a racist because those facts aren't politically correct. What the fuck is you goal in this conversation?

I'll be generous and go first. My goal is to re-introduce rationality into this discussion. That's it.

    CaptainShuddup says

I mean hell if you're going to think I was being racist for my inclusionary remarks then the same principal should hold true for your exclusionary assertion.

You seriously need to work on your English skills. An assertion is a statement that claims something as absolutely true without providing evidence. For example, I could assert that there are an infinite number of primes or I could assert there are an infinite number of cats. Both are assertions. One happens to be true, and the other false. But without proof or evidence, they are both assertions.

I have made no assertions in this thread. I did make a conjecture about the non-genetic causes of the discrepancy in academic performance among various ethnic groups, but I clearly stated that it was my belief, not a fact. Furthermore, there was nothing racist or bigoted about my conjecture. In fact, I'm pretty sure this guy would agree with the reasons I gave.

    CaptainShuddup says

All I said asked is why do dumb people cary smart phones.

Here's the thing about implying stuff. If you say X and mean Y and say X in such a way that your intended audience knows you really mean Y, people who aren't in your intended audience are also going to know you mean Y. We all can read between the lines, and we all can figure out what statement you are trying to make by asking a question. If we couldn't, there would be no point in you using this rhetorical tactic in the first place.

<BrooklynAccent>I'm just asking, why are there so many pedophiles in the Catholic Church? I'm not saying that the Catholic Church is bad or anything. I just want to know why its full of child rapists.</BrooklynAccent>

Granted, the example I gave above is actually true, whereas yours is not. But you get the point.

    CaptainShuddup says

It sure seems dumb to me to hold a device that takes two hands, and your undivided attention, to text or tweet while your driving or walking.

Ah, another rhetorical tactic. When your initial position has been utterly discredit, claim that you really meant something entirely different, even irrelevant, to what you initially advocated.

I wasn't saying that the Catholic Church is full of child rapists. I was just saying that it seems dumb that child rape isn't taken more seriously. What, with the touching and the groping. I think children should be eating ice cream, not penis. But that's just me. Feel free to disagree.

It's like a reverse Straw Man argument. Instead of making up a position and claiming your opponent advocates it, you make up a new position and claim that's what you always meant.

    CaptainShuddup says

No I feel good at my initial claim that dumb people carry smart phones and there's ample data to back my claim with out you getting all Daniel Carver on me.

Unfortunately, your Reverse Straw Man doesn't account for any of the things you said in previous posts, nor does it relate in any way shape or form to the CNN article. Finally, it has nothing to do whatsoever with ethnic background, so why even bring up such statistics if that's your point.

By the way, I realize that Reverse Straw Man sounds like a sexual position, so I'm trademarking it. How long before someone defines that term on Urban Dictionary?

    Vicente says

They know that Obama has NSA software installed on smartphones.

Actually, there is considerable spyware installed on smart phones. It's why I don't surf with them. It's scary how pervasive this is. Of course, the spyware is installed by companies for the sake of tracking what you do online. Your smart phone identifies you individually, right down to your social security number, which is associated with your phone account. That's why marketers are so interested in it.

The worst is Carrier IQ, which is on Android phones but not IPhones anymore.

Smartphone rootkit software company CarrierIQ receives letter from US Senator
    Carrier IQ keylogger

These programs can and do steal your bank account passwords and other encrypted data because it records your actual keystrokes and can send them to a server.

    Why are you being racist?

I know that you've heard that the best defense is a good offense, but that cliché isn't always

Dan...Might I suggest the ignore button for this guy. It works and it's delightful.

I expect IPhones to maintain 10-20% of the market, Android to maintain 80-90% of the market, and there to be trace amounts of other smart phone solutions.

What, no Symbian love in your prediction? I love my Nokia N8.

Another great reason to go Symbian, no Carrier IQ!

Actually, yes I realize that Symbian is dead along with the stillborn MeeGo.

I agree that Apple's walled garden business model will probably cause its dominance to decline, but I am not so sure that Android will ever have 90% of the market. My guess is that there is always going to be 15-20% of the market share taken by new and old platforms fighting for relevance.

Trace market share. I think that the app development community is ultimately going to decide the winning platform by developing a wide range of business and personal apps for one platform, and that's most likely going to be Android.

If Android becomes the platform of choice for business connectivity, remote network/system administration, and personal apps, then it will become a defacto standard.

IPhones are fine for personal apps, but admin and remote connections to corporate apps? Not a chance.

Wait a minute you're following this train wreck and you don't think he's got enough thick skin for it? Why don't you hit the ignore button, afraid you might miss some white guy with a smart phone arguing with a bunch of other white guys with smart phones about a CNN article that claimed White guys use Dumb phones. Which he can't do with out somehow blaming Obama and the other posters can read with calling him a racist.

You people would watch Glen Beck fuck and wince and bitch about it the whole time. Where do you find the Piety?
