I'm 'uncomfortable' calling MSNBC a television channel. Usually they get ratings. Once cable is forced to go a la cart this channel dies because few would pay for it.

Is everyone who dies in battle a hero? What is they are in the military, but not in combat?
What about cops, and firefighters? What about cops and firefighters in other countries?
What about soldiers in other countries?

Are you implying that America isn't God's Chosen Nation (tm)?
Everybody knows that only Americans are worth caring about. All others are to be exploited for our own good. It says so in the Bible.

My point exactly. I'd even posit that I've known and seen men who have done heroic things before, but I think they also are types that really don't give a crap if they live or die. Risking your life is heroic if you think you have something to live for. Sometimes it's just reckless.
I have veterans in the family, so it's not about the dignity and sacrifice of service, is it? It's often just people using the military (a 2nd time) to make themselves feel good and to out-"American" their fellow citizens.
And, there is of course, the strong likelihood that the Government is misusing troops for some political or financial gain. Does that change the level of heroism?
I have no horse in this race, but it does seem fair to ask and explore the question.

It's pretty much a known fact that everyone in the military isn't a hero, but by them signing up they prevent a mandatory draft. I have no problem calling them heroes just for that.
This guy is probably going to be fired. We all have controversial opinions on things but when saying them on national television you better be prepared to deal with the consequences in a nation that largely supports the troops. Who cares if they're called heroes? It's a silly word to begin with, most people associate it with a fictional character.

The funny thing is that Hayes is actually a level-headed, kind of fact-based, logical lefty. He's not pandering to a fictitious "America-hating" liberal audience.
Maybe that's why the right decided to attack him a la Breitbart? Too many facts!
