The people of Seattle also oppose the terminals overwhelmingly. They'll bring few jobs, but will potentially create huge environmental issues in transport. Not being here will make the coal more expensive, which is something that we want since climate change will affect us more than most cities.

Since when has this been a problem? I ride my bicycle past coal piles for export near the port of Baltimore all the time, and most of the time they are even covered by a tarp.

True, coal creates big environmental issues during mining (coal sludge, acid mine runoff, etc) and burning (soot, acid rain, greenhouse gas). No question about that.
How does transporting coal affect the environment much? Sure, trains and ships create exhaust, but they do so regardless of whether they're carrying coal or cat food.
