Those lazy starving people should join the Republican party and learn the virtues of hard work and independence rather than relying on handouts!

But seriously folks, most famines are not caused by lack of food, but by some armed group that is monopolizing the food and land for political reasons, or corruption. Even if the pope wanted to give them food, it's very hard to actually get the food to them. Someone will just confiscate the food at the border and sell it for a profit to someone else. The penniless poor will probably get nothing and you'll end up funding the very thugs who are causing the famine.

Though maybe the pope could try harder. Maybe airdrops of food could get around the politics and corruption at the borders.

well we put Iraqistan on welfare, lets just put the whole 3rd world on welfare too. Damn Im mean!

There is an odd phenomenon that has occured in many 3rd world countries where there is a temporary famine, so foreign aid comes in and there is free food for ALL. Then the farmers all go broke/stop farming so the next year there are no crops to harvest and no way to sell food (cuz its free handouts for all) and they become permanently a welfare state dependent on foreign handouts/security to hand out the food. Then the population outstrips the limits of the land to support it due to all children being given food and immunized. Then the big corps come in and divide up the oil, mining, timber, lumber rights and you have the current sad situation in many many countries - they can never be independent as they cannot ever ever grow enough food for everyone. amazing isnt it.

the other half of the 3rd world merely suffers from past colonials putting the small minority in charge (sunni's in iraq) so they are forever dependent on foriegn aid/weapons and u get control of the oil. sweet sweet colonialism!

Um, I think you're missing Patrick's point. You see, the Catholic Church isn't the state. It doesn't run welfare. It runs charities.

And the Catholic Church's official teaching is that people should feed the hungry, clothe the naked, care for the sick. You know, all that Jesus stuff. Yet, the Catholic Church, at the high level, certainly at the level of the Vatican is vastly rich and does little to alleviate world starvation. That does smack of hypocrisy.

Jesus didn't wear gold and nice clothes. Why should the pope?
