Burglar tries to break in Judge Lillian Sing's car

Judge Lillian Sing got a taste of judicial medicine the other day when a convicted car burglar she was trying to help walked out of her San Francisco courtroom and, within minutes, was busted for allegedly breaking into her car.

Phillip Bernard was in Community Court on Tuesday for a check of his progress while on probation for an auto burglary conviction.

Bernard, who is homeless, had missed an earlier appearance and had failed to follow his probation requirements. "I wasn't too happy with him," Sing said.

But Community Court is set up to get people help, not send them to jail for minor infractions. So Sing let him off with a stern admonishment.

"I told him he had better get into a harm reduction program and get going with a job search," Sing said.

No sooner did Sing's gavel go down, however, than Bernard exited the Polk Street courtroom, went around to the alley in back, pulled out a weighted sock and smashed the rear passenger window of a car, police said.

As fate would have it, a couple of beat cops were passing by. They nabbed Bernard, ran the car's plate and bingo - up popped the judge's name.

"He did it right under my nose," Sing said.

Bernard, 32, is now back behind bars, facing another auto burglary charge.

His next court date is Tuesday, this time in Superior Court.

As for this validating those who say Community Court is just a revolving door for petty criminals like Bernard?

"He's just one of 1,600 we deal with," Sing said. "Most of them do really well."

Maybe - but this is the one who is going to be remembered.

Build more private prisons. Use tax dollars to run them. Then we would have a place for jaywalkers.

ha - reminds me of an old neighbor I had. He was 18 years old in his senior year of high school, received a ticket for jaywalking. His high school mentality being what it was, he tore up the ticket in front of the cop.

A few years later he was pulled over for some minor infraction and did 30 days for jaywalking.

According to the story, this court is designed to give people a second chance. She was doing what she was supposed to do. It's all about the word play.

25% of the entire world's prisoners reside in a US jail, we can do better than locking up people for $30k a year. There are better solutions and we should reduce our debt. Placing people in jail that is designed to rehabilitate a person is altruistic, to place someone in jail and destroying them from the inside out for a minor offense then removing them completely from society after prison because now they are damaged is unproductive and self defeating for our entire society.

    and

calling a judge out on his or hers political leanings regardless of her actions or "REAL" ideals. is a disgrace, how dare you, don't even bother commenting in future. I'm sick of people like you!

I'm sick of political bigots using the word "LIBERAL" before any action and then make believe the adjective is some kind of dirty word!

Your a dirty fool for falling into Carl Rove's nonsense clap trap BS.

Your entire premise is faulty. A full 1/3 of California's prison population is illegal aliens. Majority of the remainder are drug offenders of one sort of another.

    The solution is:

#1.) Seal the borders. Amnesty for anyone remaining.

#2.) Eliminate minimum wage. People who are too uneducated, too lazy, or too dumb, do not deserve $7-9/hr, nor are they worth that much. OTOH, people in these categories should be able to find jobs. If thats $3 an hour, so be it. People should have incentive to improve their lot in life. A life of $3/hr is plenty of incentive.

#3.) Eliminate criminal penalties for drug use(ie, make it "tolerated"). Have drug users register, purchase, and use narcotics at licensed establishments.

The liberal judges in the modern sense are mostly naive idiots. The cited article clearly points it out. While the current justice system minimizes their errors, a correction of the laws such as I have proposed would end any sort of semblance that modern liberal judges even have a clue. Not to mention that in one fell swoop, we would also eliminate California's financial woes.

DodgerFanJohn, I agree with all but amnesty. All invaders and all invader spawn MUST be sent to country of origion and come in correctly. The only free pass should be by military service with honor.

ANd I don't care who stuffs what into their body or lungs using their money, on their time. But - all forms of welfare must be removed from the menu of things a person who chooses to partake can lean on for survival. Stupid choices need to hurt the doer, and the doer's supporters, but the public support system should not be accessed by users of drugs. Also, any female user that gets prego, the female gets tubes tied. Period.

The Native Americans wanted that too, but the white man never left.

I'm not saying I disagree with you, but you have to admit that the Mexicans are invading "our land" exactly like we invaded the Native American's land, except that the Mexicans aren't committing genocide.

The irony is that the Mexicans are basically Native American descendants, and there are so many of them because of the colonization of the Americas by Europeans.

Bap reminds me of the teacher in Starship Troopers. I suspect he would like living in that society. As for me, I was rooting for the bugs.

Of course, the problem is who gets to decide what is honorable. To me, the most honorable thing our military personnel could do is to defend the Constitution of the United States against all enemies, foreign and domestic by capturing or killing, if necessary, every politician who voted for the Patriot Act or the NDAA including Obama and Bush. Somehow I think Bap would only half agree.

The second most honorable thing they could do is rescue Bradley Manning from the enemy. And anyone holding that hero is the enemy. Manning actually did defend the Constitution of the United States against all enemies including domestic.

Ah, forced sterilization. That never was abused before.

And liberals are liars when they say there is a war on women. There's nothing belligerent about forcing a women to undergo sterilization via a highly intrusive sugary.

You do realize that which drugs are legal and which are not is determined entirely by lobbyists, right? Is alcohol included in your list of drugs that should warrant sterilization and other punishments?

The next day prison stocks jump 200% making the Top Democrat Senators rich enough to retire earlier than expected.

And on that day the government will start mass arrests of people on arcane laws and trumped up charges. The right to jury trial will be revoked as it's not "due process" since the right to a trial isn't even "due process" anymore. Judges will robostamp your family's conviction and although there will be an appeals process, it will be expensive and just for show.

One thing is for certain. You will not be the slave masters in this new world order. Adjust your political views accordingly.

Yeah, bullets are WAY cheaper than locking up people for $30K or more per year. Either that or we can use prison labor to make products cheaper than the Chinese.

I know Judge Sing. I've worked with her in her court. She is not a liberal judge by any means. Here's an idea: Instead of attacking her, go watch her in court. She is hard as nails and has a reputation for being so. Community Court was created to unclog the municipal court with very minor-league crimes. Everybody can't go on trial nor does every miscreant deserve to go to jail for stealing some razors so he can shave.
