Significant problems are BEING caused by this "selective memory".
Although "selective memory" mitigates feelings of depression in the present, it later morphs our civilization in significant & unexpected ways. A few examples;
#1. Reverse discrimination has NOT been as beneficial for the Irish.
#2. Women became credit worthy (1973) home prices doubled in half a decade. Our mentality then accepts "unjustifiable appreciation".
#3. Gubmint's primary purpose is to protect it's people from monopolies like banks. W.T.F. ?
Hitler almost won due to pacifism.

That article is quite believable. It's very similar to what happened to the American Indians. It was in both cases about clearing land for foreign colonization. Very helpful to define the people living on the land as animals so that you don't have to feel bad about killing them and stealing their land.

Interesting article. Sad to say, never had heard of this before. But slavery did exist during Roman times too and back then, most slaves were probably whites, Egypitans, Persians -anybody captured in war etc.
Those were tough times.

This article looks like an attempt to generate a fake meme. The article contains many assertions but no references, including a quote purportedly from legislation without citation or even specifying a jurisdiction. The quote doesn't appear anywhere except in this article, which has been posted to a variety of websites including apparently a Sikh news site; basically, anywhere someone can post an article in order to get attention and create drama, get people fighting, etc. Like the nooses that sparked the Jena 6 episode, this appears to be a juvenile prank.

Anyone see the History channel documentary "Skeletons on the Sahara"?
http://www.amazon.com/History-Special-Skeletons-The-Sahara/dp/B001CU9E9K
Its based on a book by the same name which was based on an earlier book "Sufferings in Africa" written by James Riley, an American sea captain in 1817. Riley and his crew were wrecked off the coast of Africa (western Sahara area). He and the crew were captured and pressed into slavery by Arab traders as was the custom of the time.
Its a good story, one which supposedly influenced Abraham Lincoln and attitude toward the institution of slavery. It also brings to light the fact that slavery was - and is still - quite common throughout the world.
