Middle school students suspended for watching porn, masturbating, in class

This is clearly not the way modern electronic technology was meant to be deployed in the classroom. NBC San Diego reports that nine male students were suspended from Bell Middle School for allegedly masturbating while watching pornography on their cell phones during English class.

The suspension occurred in May, but the district has remained close-mouthed about the incident, stating only that officials are “prohibited from commenting on confidential student or personnel matters.” The efforts at stonewalling extend to the teacher, Ed Johnson, who was reportedly told about the behavior as it was happening but refused to take action.

Perhaps not surprisingly, the teachers union has Johnson’s back. NBC notes that a union representative has expressed skepticism at the reports of what went down, dismissing the source of the accusations as “students in the classroom.”
