This is why Golden Dawn is such a crime. The horror the Nazis inflicted on Greece was completely unprovoked and, in part, genocidal. Greece had fought back the Italians with farm tools and WW I carbines and Germany occupied, punished and looted Greece. Reparations were taken off the table at Yalta and subsequent post-war agreements while Greece was reeling from internal political strife. Greeks born before the 1960s would likely feel that the country was owed reparations from Germany and know exactly why.

Any true student of history will know that it was reparations forced on Germany by the league of nations at the close of WWI that set the stage for, and indeed almost required that there would be a Part Two to that war. It came, sure enough, brought on by crippling reparation taxes levied against the citizens of Germany that led to a complete debasement in German currency which wiped out wealth in that country. It would be a lot like the UN deciding that the USA had to pay reparations to Vietnam in the amount of five times our national GNP. Oh, and give up any colonies you've got, even though they are the shittiest ones in the world.
Reparations only punish the people, not the assholes who start wars. And if you oppress an entire people, don't be surprised when they unite behind the first megalomaniac (Hitler) who promises them both freedom and glory.

Germans make cool stuff, quality goods and machinery that serves the world well. What the hell does Greece make except a stink when they are cut off from the tits of Europe? Maybe they should stop making a fuss and Get to freaking work. The world can't afford to give them national welfare anymore. I'm sure that their leaders did "envision a different union with Europe." It was mouth firmly pressed to nipple, sucking away like a greedy piglet!

I'm sure the Vietnamese would find those terms half of what they're owed for the USA's unprovoked attack on Vietnam. Alberta might as well attack Kiribati.
Nothing in the armistice agreement forced the Germans to send the Italians to attack Greece and then go to Greece themselves to murder millions there and loot the place. Small TOWNS were depopulated. This at a time when Greece was trying to get on its feet after freeing itself from the collapsing Ottoman shithouse.
A lot of Greeks were appalled that E and W Germany were allowed to reunite knowing nothing good could come of it from experience.
So, let me get this straight. Driving a country into the grave and provoking the legitimization of an outfit like Golden Dawn is just fine but discomfiting a rich country that had gone fascist but attained prosperity on the backs and through the forgiveness of the West is oppression?
