Since healthcare is a new section of Patrick.net I wanted people interested in it to read an article I wrote a little while ago.

As simple and effective way to save you from this is to stop buying shit. Use old, second-hand furniture, likely better made and even if it had issues by now most chemicals have leeched out long ago. But Americans simply can't stop buying shit.

On that note, I wish quality manufacturing would return to the US. They had (and still have few) great products like Caterpillar boots and such.

I got some of my furniture from Room and Board. Much is still made in the US.

I get much of my furniture from Ikea, and almost all of it is made in Eastern Europe (Sweden, Poland, Russia, Romania). To me that's way better then anything Asian, and it's also the only thing that's going to fit in my house anyway (small house).

Thanks for sharing! We've been aware (suspicious?) of this for a while and have tried to steer clear of these products.
Only thing I would add is that office furniture is probably just as bad, and multiplied by a factor of 50 or more (with limited ventilation). Just thinking about it is starting to make my skin crawl.

Had to send back a night table because of the noxious fumes it emanated. Before I realized this was just something that we shouldn't have around, I sprayed it with two bottles of a special deodorizer at $8 each and left it outside for two weeks - no change. Cost me $35 to send it back.
I see that cases of leukemia have been linked to formaldehyde exposure. My mother was diagnosed with CML about two years ago. Her bedroom furniture was expensive, bought about 20 years ago, so IDK. Maybe the office, as was mentioned by CMY.
Giving my daughter's furniture (cheap) the stink eye now.

I agree, but they aren't aware of the dangers.

My stuff from Ikea is unfinished pine, which I finish myself (and I am almost an expert at this).
