California, Washington state, the upper midwest, New England, parts of the mid Atlantic and Maryland are progressive. The rest of the nation is not.

Jimmy Carter got 49 Electoral votes in 1980. Walter Mondale got 10 in 1984. Dukakis got 111 in 1988, the party having somewhat recovered from the debacle of Vietnam and Carter.

I think that at some level, we're going to see a replay of those years of Democrats in the political wilderness. Yes, they controlled the House during many of them but the party itself was very different from what it is today. Tip O'Neill and Danny Rostenkowski are long gone, replaced by Nancy Pelosi and Steny Hoyer who supposedly isn't a bad guy but who most of the time isn't listened to since he's become fairly moderate.

It's a well known Beltway factoid that Nancy and Steny grew up and served as pages together in the House many years ago. She's from the old Italian neighborhood in Baltimore and he was always the working class kid who made good:

You simply have no tether to reality.

Barack Obama, had he run for the Republican nomination in 1980, would have been considered far too conservative to beat Reagan.

You want examples? Killing international terrorists with drones? Even Reagan armed Iran and Iraq discreetly. A capital gains tax of 20%? Are you kidding? Reagan supported 28% and THEN supported treating capital gains as regular income. Reagan gave amnesty to illegal aliens. Reagan supported some trade tariffs even as he tore them down. Reagan extended the debt ceiling without question. Reagan gave a speech calling for rich people to pay higher taxes because the national debt was growing too fast. Reagan rubber stamped most of Carter's spending requests. Don't believe me?

    http://www.nytimes.com/1981/02/11/us/reagan-won-t-cut-7-social-programs-that-aid-80-million.html?pagewanted=all

You are simply brainwashed......no bullshit, ACTUALLY brainwashed, not like in a sitcom, but CLINICALLY BRAINWASHED if you believe Democrats have been moving left while the country has moved right.

Republicans are now totally the party of failed ideas. They offer nothing but more of the same. They claim fiscal responsibility and people laugh because they know it's a lie. It was ALWAYS a lie. They claim tax cuts will stimulate the economy but throughout enormous tax cuts, the economy only gets worse. Republicans appeal to family values but then we already know they are on the wrong side of history on gay marriage and abortion.

So what's left? There's nothing left. George Bush was EVERYTHING that Romney promises. All of it. In fact I defy you to name a single SPECIFIC policy difference between the two men.

    You can't. You won't.

Reagan was a socialist who hated America, and I heard he was born in Kenya.

Yeah...and here's a pic of Reagan in his younger days too!

Yes, Obama smoked weed, a drug that should be legal by any rational criteria. Bush snorted coke, a drug that should not be legal. Additionally, no person with common sense would look at George W. Bush and say, "that guy never smoked weed".

Now, I have no problem with bringing up the absolute hypocrisy of Obama in continuing the war on drugs when that very war would have prevented him from becoming president or even an elected official had he been prosecuted for his drug use. Yes, that's very hypocritical. But be consistent in pointing out the hypocrisy of both side least you become a hypocrite yourself.

How am I being a hypocrite? All I did was post a picture.

It doesn't take a genius to figure out why you posted that picture. You wanted people to think Obama is unworthy to hold office because he's a drug user. The hypocrisy is not also applying that standard to George Bush, Newt Gingrich, and a host of other republicans.

You do realize that I was making fun of the republican tendency to make Obama out to be something he's not, right?

    Ruki says

Obama WAS unworthy to old the office he has before Day One

On that we agree. The problem is we don't agree on why, and why is more important than what.

Oh yes...the Holocaust of the Unborn that has slain more people since Roe v. Wade than Stalin, Hitler and Pol Pot combined.

    Should be smoking weed

or may be the world for you starts at EST and ends at PST

forcing mothers to give birth to kill their babies by sending them to war is inhumane

Its the same ppl who complain about welfare babies and turn around and want to force ppl to have unwanted babies

except america the world has moved on, about half a century back, about women's right to bear kids..we seem to be moving towards a new Sharia of the newcons and rednecks

I believe in abortion. For minorities. : ) And of course, no one should ever try to get in between a negro and his weed. They go together like peanut butter and jelly. No one blames obongo for acting like a negro and smoking weed; they expect that sort of thing. It's 'cultural', like Michael Vick and the dogfights.

Abe, you should refrain from making alts. You simply don't have the knack.
