Obviously this message is partially for Patrick, but far more importantly what does that say about housing bears? People who say Realtors are spreading misinformation? People who claim they only want to get the truth out yet try to squelch any other opinions like spoiled little children?
One dimensional boards die a quick death. I have no doubt Patrick will fix this, but I think the hypocrites who are abusing the system should take a good look in the mirror.

I am actually on vacation but it's also somewhat of a work trip. I'm in Pennsylvania now and I thought I'd take a trip up to Detroit to have a look. For all the posts I've read (and written) on Detroit, I figured it would be a good idea to experience it first hand.
I also hate writing on my laptop because the eyes simply don't work so good anymore, but I wanted to jump in on this flagging nonsense. Trolls will troll but the fewer weapons they have the better.

Many of your ideas piss me off Iwog. But the system needs to be tolerant of almost all points of view in order to reach some sort of intelligent balance. You do anger a number of people and a number of those are just ignorant of Schadenfreude. Remember all the fun you used to have calling the liquor store and asking if they had any of DAD's Root Beer ? He's on his way with a shotgun to take it back ? Immature pranks teach us all something. While the hack intends to hurt you, he does not even realize he just denies readers. If Patrick raises the block to 5 dislikes it will not cure the problem. Got any simple suggestions?

This shit is what ruined Craigslist.
It used to be you could find decent musicians, and decent musical instruments in the for sale section on CL. But somewhere around 2007, it became the collective Assholebase. You would take the time to post or read CL, then come back the next day and every single post that posted was flagged and deleted. My Guess is because some jaded asshole that got flagged, with the wherewithal to log in multiple computers and create multiple accounts, or working with multiple nose pickers, would flag every single post that was made over the week end. Then it devolved into a name calling, and a public forum to air dirty laundry and accuse other users of flagging every one. I thought this was limited to South Florida but it was happening in every major city.
I haven't looked at CL in years. Maybe for Lawn and garden stuff or to find people to yard work. But it is no kind of place to find intelligent people, that you want to strike up any kind of relationship with. Working, Creative or Professional wise. I'm never surprised when Craigslist killers spring up in towns. The type of incivility that whole rate me/grade me system fosters would only attract people with serious mental defects.
I wasn't aware that three flags gets your post removed, if that's the case I'm not going participate on this board anymore my self.
When Iwog's posts start getting flagged then this site has become UNUSABLE.

I was wondering where you went IWOG.
I find IWOG generally balanced in his opinion though I may not agree with it, and I certainly don't want him banned.
There are certainly more disruptive posters who turn everything into petty one-upper battles (tatupu70, realtors are liars, etc). I find simply ignoring them (putting them on the ignore list) pretty much solves the entire issue.

I think the system is fair, maybe increase it to 4-5 down votes? If 5 people think your comments are disruptive to the community, then there's a good chance that they are.

I thought Patrick reviewed posts that gets 3 dislikes, not that the site automatically removes them.
Although, I think that housing still has a way to fall in the sunshine belt states Florida/California/Arizona where it rose the most, I agree with Iwog that in some areas least affected by the bubble it is already a good time to buy and housing is stable.
And I know that Iwog backs up his claims with evidence, so I can't see how any of his posts are trolling by any standard.

Absolutely not. I disagree with people all the time. I never "dislike" a post because I disagree with it. I only dislike posts that are obvious trolling or a misrepresentation of another person's argument.
I don't even "dislike" posts that are factually incorrect. I simply reply with the correct data.

However, FortWayne's reply brings up a good post. Perhaps there should be a "agree/disagree" voting system. It would be separate from like/dislike.

I disagree. Patrick.net has been evolving from a real-estate bubble forum to a social and political forum. With the bubble in its final stage, it makes sense that this site would transition to new territory.
It's sad that our country is so polarized that the left and the right can't talk to each other without it degenerating into an argument between 6-year-olds, but such arguments on patrick.net are a reflection of our nation as a whole.
At least this site is one place where the two sides both come to argue their points. Most media outlets are controlled only by one side and only puppets are allowed to speak for the other side. I think this site has done a pretty good job of letting both sides make their arguments. Granted, both sides aren't equally valid or supported by facts, but that's not the site's fault.

I don't think there are many or any permabears on this site. Housing does make sense to buy when the supply isn't being artificially limited and there isn't ramped speculation driving up prices.
The whole housing bubble burst would have been over in 2008/2009 if the government hadn't done everything to keep housing prices inflated. And the economy would be much better today because people would be buying houses, furniture, etc. instead of holding back purchases out of fear. Bubbles that burst quickly cause far less pain than bubbles that slowly deflate. A sudden drop followed by price stability restores confidence in a market.

I also appreciate IWOGs contributions. I tend to agree strongly with him politically but less so on real estate. The latter is clearly a reflection of the differences in our local markets.
I appreciate the debate though - its a terrible thing to become so set in one's beliefs they don't recognize change and/or opportunity when it is upon them.

Yeah, auto-delete would not work under such situations. I think I've seen one of my postings get deleted too, and there's no way that post was offensive -- unlike some of my other posts.
But I thought patrick.net didn't do auto-deletion. It's a way dangerous feature.
Also, I don't think I've ever seen an instance of a troll who's user picture was of themselves with a dog. That usually means a non-trollish personality.

Yes, clearly trollishness is not a function of how much two people disagree, but how they go about that disagreement. And I'll admit that sometimes a troll will piss me off enough to make me -- how should I put it? -- use unfriendly humor to illuminate some of his personal failings. But Iwog is gentle compared to some of the ass-tearings I've dished out.

Hopefully not here in Amish country to speculate on any of our beautiful farm land! SE PA has seen a pace of developement and sprawl that most people could never imagine (over the last 15ish years). It hiccuped for a bit with the 08 crash, but they're back at it.
Some mega corp with a jewey lawyer type name has bought up most of the rental complexes, so someone else saw prospect for some nice rent capture here over the last years.
