Whoops.......so much for Shrek's predictive ability. I'm beginning to like Roberts. First he throws out the Arizona law, now he upholds health care reform.
I'm actually pretty amazed by this decision. I hope it represents a real evolution in the thinking of John Roberts and not just a couple of instances of temporary sanity.
Liberal chief justice John Roberts........I like the sound of that!

The ruling today by Scotus is a step forward for all citizens.
How can America be proud when they currently stand at #37 in the WHO World Health Crea Rankings. Link:
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/World_Health_Organization_ranking_of_health_systems
That is only two places in front of Cuba, who have been subjected to economic sanctions for years.
And considering that the USA spends the most on healthcare of any nation, you should be #1 in the rankings.
I grew up in England as a child, and was used to our single payer system with the NHS, and it is so much better than what I currently have in the USA under an employer based private system.
Realistically, all Americans should be appalled that their country is at #37.
Coincidently, even the CIA has the USA on the Life Expectancy rankings at #51. Which is one place behind Cuba. Link:
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/List_of_countries_by_life_expectancy#List_by_the_CIA_World_Factbook_.282011_estimates.29
Come this July 4th, Americans really have little to celebrate in real terms of quality of life, affordable healthcare, Life expectancy, as in reality someone in Monaco is going to enjoy life by a whole 11.36 more years.
But hey, atleast you have the Worlds best military that is 13 times larger than its nearest rival, but cannot defeat a group of rags heads in a underdeveloped country.

Absolutely agree.
Yet the left, that chooses to stay uninformed thinks this will not make insurance more prohibitively expensive. The penalty of $95 or whatever it is, isn't going to be anywhere close to the huge surgery bills that will result from people getting insurance post trauma because they cannot be declined.
And since with this law pre existing conditions cannot be used to determine individual risk, that risk has to be assumed across the board...
Healthcare costs will skyrocket and so will insurance since they are a pass through system.

Ah, ha ha ha -- pretty funny, I guess they like Canada's socialized health care system much better.
Rather than Canada they should make a real stand against Obamacare and move to a country that does not provide universal health care.

It is shocking, but I think there are two sides to this coin. I think Americans tend to have less healthy lifestyles than many benchmark countries. It would be interesting to see data on the average BMI, for example, of the countries in that ranking.
It's absolutely shocking to return to the United States after traveling abroad for a week or so. FAT FAT FAT people everywhere you look. God help you if you fly into Cincinnati.
I wonder how our health care system would rank if fat Americans weren't so fat.

Today was a great day for freedom. The freedom not to worry that one will be bankrupt in order to treat horrible medical conditions. The knowledge that you will no longer be turned away from a preexisting condition brings a sense of certainty that allows people to live with much less worry and hence increases the quality of life. The idea that one could be turned away from coverage due to cancer (example of preexisting condition) is just unconscionable and is not how a society that professes to value human rights should have comported itself. However, everyone must take responsibility for themselves. I would go a step further. Since we all know that obesity is the #1 killa via deseases such as diabetes, high blood pressure, heart desease, etc. I would place people on a 5 year warning starting today, that they must get their under 28 starting June 28th 2017 or risk losing coverage for preexisting conditions that could reasonably be ascertained to result from high BMI. This 5 year window is more than enough time to make lifestyle changes via diet and exercise to get the weight under control. And if someone were to cry that such a policy is an infringement on their freedom, that is a a childish response since fixing the obesity epidemic lowers need for healthcare and thus saves money to society and all participants.

BMI does not take muscle into account. For example, star running back Emmitt Smith had a BMI of 32 when playing. Under that suggestion, most pro football players would be punished for being too strong.

Here is a questionnaire that can help you determine your chances of getting to live in Canada:

"I am thrilled. I can't tell you what this means," said Levendoski (57 years old), who is still recovering from two 10-hour surgeries in 2011 to correct spinal fractures and a compressed spinal cord, which left her virtually paralyzed."
What again does this person do for society? At the age of 57, what can this person do going forward after a bunch of money is spent on them?
I would be okay with kids, who have their whole life ahead of them, getting said treatment, but I'm NOT for paying a bunch of money to help old people live a little longer. People are retiring at 65, eating up all the Social Security I'll never get while living [like a vegetable] in to their 90's and I'm paying for their complicated surgeries. Fantastic.

No. Attempting to ban guns in schools (lopez) has nothing to do with Taxes. Restrictions on the transportation of chickens (Us. V. Schecter Poultry) has nothing to do with taxes. Refusal to deliver a comission (Marbury) has nothing to do with taxes. There are lots of things the US government would like to do that they cannot.

No, the mandate that everyone has to be insured is what pays for those benefits.
Fortunately we have an example of how this works out. Massachusetts
Look, if it doesn't work out well there will be other reforms. The good news is the change, progress.
Ultimately the best thing would be medicare for all. With people buying optional supplemental policies. Just think the huge proportion of our health care that is already handled that way.

I'm in favor of everyone carrying their own weight, and only the helpless (kids/young adults) getting help above and beyond what they've been able to contribute.
The needs of the many should not suffer for the needs of the few, especially the few who have already lived 60+ years.

Really? You really think it's "more or less the same now anyway". HAHAA... You think the average doctor 'uses their massively overpriced education' to overcharge? They are pawns in the system just like we are. Any primary care physician within 5-10 years of retirement, is going to say 'fuck it!" I'm not gonna eat a slice of Obama-care-Shit-Pie." I'm not going to wait 6-9 months to get paid .80 cents on the dollar. They are going to go into a specialty practice. Any young doctor out of school isn't going into primary. Look at Canada. All doctors are TOLD to go where they are told to go, and told what they are going to do. Not by choice, but by law.....Like my Dad used to tell me..."Kid, you ain't seen nuthin' yet".....
