There are two things exciting about 3D printing. The first is the ability to print out buildings. Unfortunately, that technology won't be available for many years even though startups have been marketing it.
The second is the ability to print electronics and electrical motors, which isn't available yet and no one has cracked that problem. But if that problem was cracked, then you could print out real products like new electronic devices and eventually television sets, cars, air vehicles, etc. But I think that's decades away.

Actually the first thing that came to mind was that one would be able to make the now banned larger round clips. It's not like it won't work if it's plastic.

The first thing that came to my mind was parts for stuff. The ability to make ones own replacement parts appeals to me since i tend to keep stuff way longer than most people and can repair most things.
