And really, isn't that the point? It's not about preventing fraudulent votes, which are non-existent. It's about preventing legitimate votes for the other side.
I say we need a voter competency exam with one question:
What was the cause of the Civil War?
a. Defense of states rights
b. Eliminating the abomination of slavery
If you answer (a), you don't get to vote.

But if that was the cause of slavery why did the union have four slave states? Maryland, Kentucky, Missouri and Deleware. Why was there a compromise in 1850 that still allowed slavery in DC then?
What specifically is the issue about having id to vote fully knowing that to obtain various services it is required?
If someone is 65 or older they have a social security card. If someone is a student they have a photo id if they go to higher education. You need id to rent a car, to get on a plane, to buy tobacco, to buy alcohol and to get into a R rated film! (assuming you don't look your age)
The easy way around this is simple. They government simply issues id to everyone. Then what is the outrage?
When I go to vote I go to my district and see usually the same people as poll workers. I give them my name and address. They cross my name off for showing up. After I vote they later do the same for checking out.
So what's the issue? Well how hard is it to get names and addresses these days? Not hard at all. So wouldn't it make more sense to try to prevent fraud? Even on a local issue this can be heated. If taxes are raised or lowered, if spending is raised or lowered wouldn't it make sense to assure that everyone votes legally?
While it is true that voter fraud is low that doesn't really mean it cannot happen. In the state of vermont the murder rate is quite low but they don't legalize murder just because it is a rarity. Imagine if a restaurant posted inside the bathrooms "All Employees Must Wash Hands Sometimes"!

And yet, after the Civil War none of these states had slavery. Go figure.

It's true that Lincoln didn't give a damn about the slaves and even campaign in the south on keeping slavery. But the Civil War was still all about slavery. If slavery didn't exist, there would have been no civil war.

Just because something happens in your mind, doesn't mean it happens in the real world.

If the voter ID laws are really to prevent fraud, then the federal government can pay to ensure that all voters have proper ID. Requiring people to pay any money to vote is by definition a poll tax.
Homeless people have the right to vote even if they don't have a damn penny to their name.
The fact remains that the only reason the republicans want these laws is to prevent legitimate voters from casting their votes for the other side. If these laws hurt the republican's elections, they would be against them. It's all about the ends justifying the means. And that's what makes it wrong.
