That means actually yielding something the other side wants (like national shall-issue concealed carry permits or federal pre-emption on bans of things like sport-utility rifles and regular capacity magazines) not just taking less than they want now with nothing for the other side. Otherwise with or without the NRA they're going to come up against a significant minority (30-34% of adults of both sexes, nearly half of adult men) that's a lot bigger than a "special interest" tipping the scales at an order of magnitude beyond what decides contested elections.
