I AM kidding. I'm just one of many people under 40 years of age frustrated out of my mind. My husband and I work long hours, never see each other, both have great degrees, and practically save everything we earn. We have still not achieved the lifestyle my parents had. Our parents didn't have great degrees, both our parents and all of our aunts and uncles lived in great homes in safe neighbourhoods and all of these families did it with ONE parent working a median income job. They even took vacations and spent money on entertainment and furniture. What can my children expect? Is it getting worse?

And make enough to support a wife, kids and live a very comfortable life.
That now is even a very small possibility even with a college degree and in many cases even with a master's or graduate degree.
This entire US economy is a joke. In fact, the US itself is a joke and a international laughingstock.
Nowadays even with both spouses working that have degrees, they can't even do what one man could do in the 1950's with just a high school diploma.
In fact, both spouses need to work these days just to make ends meet. Back then, one man could work not to just make ends meet but also for savings, entertainment, vacations, nice homes in good areas and cars.
You need a income of AT LEAST $300,000 a year after taxes these days just to do all of that.
Which not even a starting general doctor can achieve. (Most making starting $150K but not after many years of college & residency plus debt).

I certainly could, but am still hoping to go the good old fashion route with my clothes on. Not to say that the clothed plan has worked out for me so far. Teaching by day and ballet in the evening are not two jobs that keep you from poverty in the Bay Area. Everyone works two jobs here, and no one gets by under 40 here, unless they have outside help, like a rich parent. The catch for me is that my ageing family lives here, so I am stuck. In the 50s, most men had only a high school diploma - whether you became a gas station attendant or JC Penney store manager depended on your abilities and efforts. You did not have to compete with college boys for most jobs and women were completely out of the picture.
Also, the 50s "comfortable" life was cheap. No college loans to pay back. Electric bill low since no A/C, no electric dryer, and few lights. Cheap residential land line phone subsidized by business and long distance callers (all Ma Bell). No mobile/smart phone bill. No cable bill. Kid's clothes were cheap (often sewn by mom, no "starters" or "nikes"). Also small houses with one modest car per family. Kids toys cheap (no "playstation"). No day care bill, babysitters cheap. Hand washed cloth diapers, hand washed dishes, meals cheap because wife bought basic food and prepared meals (husband's favorite food in the 50s and 60s was meatloaf). Very few divorces (today's divorces are a huge drain on family money).
About all this talk on "degrees." I noticed that so many who feel shortchanged because the "economy" does not sufficiently reward them for their degree, never say what the degree is in.
