The IRS is likely to audit high income individuals, especially with deductibles. Holding IRS audits against Romney makes no sense, especially since the IRS is evil anyway. The real problem with people like Romney is that they bribe Senators, representatives, and presidents to alter the tax code to make their taxes lower at the expense of everyone else. The crime isn't that Romney and his ilk broke the law. The crime is that they wrote the law.

It is very unlikely that being audited has anything to do with why Romney does not want to release his tax forms. Getting audited is not a crime (or even reason to believe a crime has been committed). Lots of people get audited. I would be surprised if there was anything actually illegal about Romney's returns. However, if you think a $70k wright-off for owning a fancy horse pisses off the peasants almost assuredly his past returns will show many "legal" things even more infuriating to the common man.
