North polar icecap rushes to all time melt record

You're going to be seeing headlines on this in about two weeks. That's when I'm guessing the arctic ice melt will reach an all time record and most of the arctic ocean will be free of ice and navigable.

http://arctic.atmos.uiuc.edu/cryosphere/arctic.sea.ice.interactive.html

The blue starts in 1979. The more red the line, the more recent the year. (dark red is 2011) Each horizontal line is 1 million sq. kilometers. When the graph reaches the bottom, the north pole is completely melted. x-axis is day of the year.

"This is not a climate model or a prediction but actual observations of weather events and temperatures that have happened,"

"Our analysis shows that it is no longer enough to say that global warming will increase the likelihood of extreme weather and to repeat the caveat that no individual weather event can be directly linked to climate change. To the contrary, our analysis shows that, for the extreme hot weather of the recent past, there is virtually no explanation other than climate change."

So when a conservative makes an observation, it's crackpot lunacy, but when Libs do it, it's a detailed analysis.

When liberals get any govt. money, it's socialism.
When conservative congressmen get health care paid for by taxes it's free enterprise.

    iwog,
I think I just disproved that there is any North polar icecap melting. ROFLMAO

I think this is another instance where I don't have any fricken clue what point you're trying to make.

Global warming is happening period. That graph with the little squiggly lines on it should shock the hell out of everyone.

I love the politicization of this issue. Who cares if global warming is due to natural, man-made, or a hybrid of both causes? If instead of global warming it were an asteroid on a highly probable, earth-crossing collision course, would you want to at least start thinking about what we might do about it? Sadly, these days we'd probably just end arguing about how it's all a liberal/conservative conspiracy.

Exactly and I didn't really post this to start the science debate all over again. (although it was inevitable)

What's happening in the arctic right now is unprecedented, has huge implications on everything from weather to oil exploration to the extinction of polar bears, and is happening real time as we speak. The record melt is updated every single day so you can watch it like the stock market.

In two weeks it is going to be the lead story on every newscast when the record breaks and there's more open ocean than ever before. I'm just posting it early.

We used to be plagued with tomato worms in our garden. It was practically a full time job to cull them out.

Over the years we don't have that problem any more. The tomato worms came from little butterflies.

I was wondering if the changing climate has had something to do about it.

No, it's waiting until I buy a house. By the way, can we pass a law that states if Florida does go underwater, all republican voters have to compensate non-republican Floridians for the loss of property and livelihood? If we did that, then I'd be okay with republicans calling Global Warming a myth. Just put your money where your mouth is.

No one said Florida is supposed to be under water by now. The north pole is ice cubes floating in an ocean. When they melt, they don't raise the sea level.

The reason the north pole is important is that ice is a heat sink. As long as there's ice floating around in the water, the heat will go into melting the ice instead of heating the air.

It's when the icepack is too far gone to absorb heat that we'll be in trouble.

Yep, it's the ice that's on land that will raise sea level when it melts.

Remember, ice is frozen water. So when it melts, that extra space it occupied as a solid no longer contributes to it's volume. That's why when ice melts in a glass of water filled to it's brim, the water doesn't overflow the glass.

The bright side is we will be able to farm in areas that we cant at this time.

The down side, America does not sit on those new lands.

The bright side, the EPA will have to go protest China farmers for making dust, burning fuel, using water, and cow farts. Adgenda 21 heads to China. That should be grand.

I thought the ice "albedo" was the crucial thing: the ability to reflect incoming sunlight back into space, helping to keep the arctic cold.

Nothing. Global warming is inevitable and humans are destined to destroy the earth. You can't take 2 billion years of stored hydrocarbons and throw them all into the atmosphere over a period of a single century without wrecking the planet. It's just fun to watch.

Amazing and sad this observation has been posted in Politics and depressing the stream of the conversation.

Cloud, what advantage do you get from contesting or attempting to degrade this information that's been posted? If its true and it certainly seems to be then what kick do you get from opposing this or trying to drag it for some reason into the liberal against conservative effort? Please explain. Are you deep down afraid that if you give in to admitting the truth of the thing iwog has posted that then you'll have to agree to watching an hour less of tv a day or something, and THEN what?... Please explain why youve come out swinging on this one.

IF and that's a big freaking "IF", Global Warming is a real problem, then why are all of the solutions a $45,000 automobile, and the Liberal green movement gets its Knickers in a wad when the Chinese flood the market with "CHEAP" solar panels?

The solutions of the "Conservation movement" were more plausible than this lot.

Conservation = consume less = 0 wall street profits

Green movement = consume premium solutions = quarterly profits and hefty bonuses

Automobiles can be powered by electricity. However, we will need oil for planes. But that is a very small portion of fossil fuel consumption.

Nevertheless, stories like this are just fear-mongering. Taking the wrong policy decisions to "reverse" or mitigate global warming can make us worse off.

Also, I thought geographically America should be relatively less-affected by global warming. This means that other folks may be more nervous. If they want us to do something they should pay us.

The sad thing is, both extremes of the political response to this are fucking stupid. Of course the outcomes can be changed through a concerted, technological effort. No, the answer is not mere conservation. Thinking that is tantamount to a wishing on a nursery rhyme.

Whatever happened to PROGRESSIVE response to challenges? Once upon a time the progressive was neither "conservative" or "liberal", but was someone who looked at a problem, sized it up for what it really was irrespective of how it came to be, and then attacked it in a creative and often non-intuitive way.

As Peter said, the Earth is really sturdy. Human society, on the other hand, is wildly dynamic. It has always been changing and will continue to change. As it does, this too will come to pass. How we leverage our advances in science and technology to guide that passage is up to us.

But, as we can see by this discussion, we'd rather waste another generation or two pissing on each others ideologies.
