The obvious alternative to mortgage debt is to rent a house instead of buying one.

Renting vs buying is also a lifestyle/cultural decision. I know people in Switzerland who only rent like everyone else out there. They plan on retiring in the 50's and then live a year in different cities in Europe and other parts of the world.
