Savings on enforcement and incarceration during that same period would also top more than $12 million, the group said.
How can you put a price tag on freedom? It would be nice to see all the prohibitionists and those that profit from the greatest tragdey of our time, to meet their comeuppance, but I digress.
Marijuana is so exhorbitantly expensive solely because of economic rent. Can't say I'm a big fan of collecting this as a tax. For what reason do pot smokers have to pay such extorsion? Who do they owe? For what? I guess its somewhat better than the current alternative of violently abusing these poor, peaceful peoples right to life and liberty, but the only rational solution here is out and out decriminalization. No reason that this plant needs any further regulation than the rest of the plants that I grow in my garden

"That runs contrary to President Barack Obama’s logic: he said in 2010 that legalizing marijuana is not “a good strategy to grow our economy.” "

Obama campaigned on leaving well enough alone with the states deciding how they want to treat mmj. As with any issue and any politician, he did plenty of talking from both sides of his mouth. One good thing that will occur, is drastic federal funding for war on drug operations beginning in 2013.
What more can you expect from lying sack of shit politicians

Prison guards' unions are opposed to legalization because it would cut down on the number of prisoners taxpayers would have to pay for.
And the Mexican drug cartels are opposed to legalization, because it would lower pot prices.
Almost forgot: beer makers and distributers also fund anti-legalization lobbying. Pot competes with beer.

I can't imagine that prison guard unions are that much a driving force behind keeping this insanity going. Follow the big money
What about criminal defense lawyers, every layer of the police state, the court system and all the probation profiteers? the government in and of itself would never admit to being wrong and reverse course and do what's right, and besides, why would they? Lawmakers and judges and lawyers all get off on fucking over the poor saps that get caught up into the perpetuity of the system.
Let's not forget big pharma
100 years ago, medicine in this country consisted of dr that would come to your door with a briefcase, and the extent of their medicinal tool bag was heroin, cocaine, marijuana, and likely some strong booze. And look how much healthier people were!
