For Monday, 2,499 flights are cancelled, with 774 cancellations at Newark, followed by 428 at Dulles in Washington and 355 cancellations at Philadelphia. Hurricane Sandy is heading north from the Caribbean, where it has left nearly five dozen dead, to meet a winter storm and a cold front, plus high tides from a full moon, and experts say the rare hybrid storm that results will cause havoc over 800 miles from the East Coast to the Great Lakes.

I've been reading all the reports on Sandy. Is it going to be as bad as they claim or is it just Sensationalism by the media like the polls & the election? We need more advertising dollars?

The media knows nothing about hurricanes, or much of anything else for that matter. That's why they are reporters. They are just repeating what the National Hurricane Center is saying. NHC tends to over call since it's better to be more prepared than you need to be than less. At this point no one knows what will happen, only the probabilities of what could happen. It depends on storm track and tides. Making landfall at the height of a spring tide could cause huge damage while low tide could result in little damage.

Hurricanes are very unpredictable creatures. Sandy could be a fizzle or a huge disaster. The last hurricane to really hammer the Jersey shore was Donna in 1954 when almost no one lived there compared to today. Even so the damage was terrific. Long Beach Island was pretty destroyed. A comparable storm today with the entire shore so heavily built up would cause billions in damage. Good thing all those people rich enough to own beach houses at the Jersey Shore are insured with your tax dollars for a nominal amount thanks to fema's NFIP program. Without NFIP there would be very few houses built on the barrier islands.

Well they did close the NY subways and the stock market. They wouldn't do that unless it was supposed to be pretty big.
