These simple price histories are VERY instructive, but they are RARELY shown.
http://showrealhist.com/yTRIAL.html
("The public be suckered.")

Both up to date:
http://www.showrealhist.com/RHandRD.html
STRAIGHTFORWARD: the main enabler of sizable asset price bubbles (very harmful) is keeping the real price histories out of sight.
The plotted data for Real Homes and Real Dow are available in these tables:
http://www.showrealhist.com/RHtable.html
http://www.showrealhist.com/TABLEnum.html

Last prices relative to extrapolated histories -- noted following the first chart here:

WOW! The UNtrustworthy are certainly in control of what information is apparent to the people!

Say hey! This was in the Wall Street Journal on March 30, 1999. Note "... how much it will buy."

    Holy cow/interesting/compelling ...!

And where is it up to date??? Right here ... see the first chart shown in this thread.

    SAME as 14.5 years ago!
Today’s Dow close of 16368.27 corresponds to a Real Dow of 102.5, see
    http://www.showrealhist.com/recDJIAtoRD.html
This is significantly above the 100. average for the month of January 2000, but it is significantly below the 103.94 peak day on January 14, 2000. That’s a while, 14.5-plus years ago.

You misunderstand greatly, GDP is nowhere on the page!
    http://www.showrealhist.com/recDJIAtoRD.html
    As detailed here
    http://www.showrealhist.com/
1.64%/yr is the average, inflation-adjusted growth of the Dow Jones Industrial Average over the 70.3 years, 9/1929 to 1/2000.
When you inflation-adjust, the extreme timing dependence of the history is clear, with the evident likelihood of explanation by 'the coming & going of irrationality', see here.

Don't you think this graph might have something to do with the Dow's rise?

Certainly you don't think stock prices should stay the same as their profits rise exponentially, right?

    tatupu,
You are saying "Plot something else!". An always available argument.

Look at 'mainline' histories that are kept unseen, to fool the people:
    http://patrick.net/forum/?p=1223928
Re. the first two charts, and the morality of hiding them -- Do you know folks who had kids in order to have someone to sell bubble-high to?

I strongly suspect that "maintaining the lies" is the main foundation for USA's misfinance.

No--I'm saying that stock prices reflect a share of the companies' cash flow or retained earnings. As cash flow/earnings rise faster than inflation, so should stock prices. And clearly that's what has been happening over the last 20-30 years.

So, why do you think stock prices should only rise with inflation??

    I do NOT so think!
The prices are measured/counted in US dollars, whose consumer purchasing power has decreased a lot over time. SO, convert the price histories to 'constant dollars' to show 'real' price history over time. I got started by this rare WSJ chart:

    Up to date by me:
    http://www.showrealhist.com/

Just as an example, inflation adjustment can be huge, and DOMINANT.
    9/1929 to 1/2000
nominal Dow rose by a factor 31.
    but CPI-U rose by a factor 9.8
so real Dow rose by a factor 3.2

    Numbers from here

You are saying "Plot something else!". An always available argument.

No--I'm saying that stock prices reflect a share of the companies' cash flow or retained earnings. As cash flow/earnings rise faster than inflation, so should stock prices. And clearly that's what has been happening over the last 20-30 years.

So, why do you think stock prices should only rise with inflation??

    I replied.

Uh--that's the definition of inflation adjusted.

So, if profits rise faster than inflation, so should stock prices.

I'll ask again--you seem to think that stock chart shows that stocks are overpriced. Why?

Or am I reading too much into your continual posts?

We have three layers of deception.
**First, NOT adjusting for inflation helps people to err in counting inflation as real gain. AND inflation is commonly bigger than true real gain! -- see my next to last preceding Comment.
**Second, The true real price history is overwhelmingly timing-dependent, and people are severely fooled if this roller-coaster reality is unseen. Reality is

    http://www.showrealhist.com/recDJIAtoRD.html
**Third, A glance at the real history raises immediately the hypothesis of serial mispricing -- VERY BAD ADVERTISING! Please note, and remember that the seven Board of Governor seats at the Fed have terms of 14 years:
    http://www.showrealhist.com/3warnsRD.html

One last point. These kept-unseen histories have been of great interest for lots of decades.

One more last point! Lots of backstabbers.

OK--but do you agree or disagree that stocks should be rising faster than inflation if their profits are doing so?

    IF IF IF
    Mispricing were zero
    yesterday
    today
    tomorrow

    then I probably would agree.
