Toro!

If housing gets cheaper, will the sushi also?

If sushi gets cheaper will Peter P buy me some?

The perfect sushi order:

2 orders $anta Barbara Uni
1 order ama-ebi
2 orders kampachi
1 order hotate
1 order teka maki
1 large Asahi.
and if Peter P. is buying
1 order tobiko w/quail egg and
1 more order Uni.

Trolls need not bother.

Personally, I like tako (octopus tentacle) nigiri style, ikura (salmon eggs) nigiri style and of course kappa maki, good old cucumber roll on a hot day.

    Maguro is another classic favourite.

Love sushi. Hope a sushi bubble does not exist, and the creatures of the sea cooperate for at least one more generation!

    Astrid,

the secret ingredient must be those tiny flying fish eggs, of course.

I'd like to see them sprinkled on huevos rancheros, with some sizzling chiles thrown on for good measure.

Okay, that's breakfast, not iron chef.

Already thinking about my next meal...

Only the most inner suburbs of Tokyo is having a mini-boom, the outer suburbs are still going down. I have been looking at a place to buy near Tokyo, but every time I looked around, it was still going down a bit. Just to give an example, a brand new SFH (2-storey 1500sf) on a Japanese-size lot (1800sf) with very solid interior finish and of course earthquake proof in a suburb around 42 minutes one-way by express train to Tokyo costs around $250K-300K. They are so precise about their distance that they publish exactly how many minutes of walk to the train station and how many minutes journey from the train station to Central Tokyo.

What is that equivalent to? Tracy? Now find me a new Tracy SFH double that sf in home and lot, and I doubt if I can find it within $500K.

Oddly I miss the curry the most, even though that isn’t authentic Japanese. There was this restaurant in Kyoto that served karage with insanely spicy curry that was to die for.

I had Japanese curry yesterday, with ebi-fry. :)

I also like my Japanese curry insanely spicy, which is not exactly easy to get. Try putting Japanes yellow mustard (NOT wasabi) in the sauce.

Maybe curry spice could be the next iron chef ingredient. I’ve got curry on the brain.

There is a Japanese anime called Mister Ajikko from the 80's. It is similar to Iron Chef, just infinitely more dramatic. It has several episodes on curry. The show should be available on DVD. The English translation by itself is a form of entertainment. (Did they use Babel Fish?) ;)

They always do. The train is your best friend.

Honestly, the Osaka area (including Kobe and Kyoto) has much better food.

Poorly prepared calimari is like this too. Same with shark. Seafood is just dreadful if it’s overcooked.

I had whale raw. It looked very interesting. But I could not even think about having a second piece.

Some seafood annot be undercooked either. Raw lobster tastes great but half-cooked lobster is horrible.

We should be thankful that California has truly great squid aka calamari.

True. I worked in a very nice restaurant while going to college, and cooking the tuna just right was kind of an art. (I wasn’t a chef though, just interested in the results ;) )

Actually I won't mind living in a Japan-sized home here, as long as the layout is perfectly thought-out, and extremely energy efficient as the new homes I saw there.

1500sf is enough for a family of 4, if you make good use of every single inch of space. Yes, you may miss the game room, bonus room, one bathroom per bedroom, but it is absolutely doable. It also forces one to collect less junk.

There is also American Kobe. But quality really varies. Caveat emptor.

Still, "70% of the cost" means that it would be more than $70/lb.

I was a poor student when I traveled there so I never had any. I would love to try it though.

To me, uni and scallop are better deals. Somehow, in Japan, seafoods are not that expensive compared to beef.

What do you need so many bathrooms for? A 1500sf has two bathrooms, one upstairs one downstairs, and remember they usually throw in an entirely useless Japanese style tatami room for .... (I never figure out what I should do with that tatami room).

I also do not understand the need for a tatami room. A library/study is more practical.

When I was growing up, we had 3 kids 2 adults, sharing one bathroom. Yeah it was a pain in the morning, but then you got used to rotating schedule for each person to get up and use it in pre-negotiated sequence. I don't mind doing it again if I have to.

I don't know if any homeowner runs a NPV analysis on their bathrooms based on usage. Powder room is entirely for vanity (come on, how many parties one is going to host), and master-bed is overrated. When I am in the den, I just head for the closests bathroom down the hall. Why not have the master bedroom share a bathroom with the other bedrooms? 2 should be plenty for a household of 4-5.

Not really, it is a great place for litterboxes.

No... I am dreaming to have his-and her-baths in the master bedroom. It is ideal to have more bathrooms than bedrooms. (e.g. 3 bed/4.5 bath) :)

    How about compartmentalized bathrooms?

We can have two toilet booths with individual ventilation, one vanity/sink section, a bath-tub booth and a small shower room. All separated from each other for privacy. This arrangement will occupy the space as two bathrooms but 4/5 people can use it at the same time, without embarrassment.

2 bathrooms shouldn't be a problem. Maybe the Japanese go out for big celebrations. $250-300K sounds extremely cheap for something that's reliably under an hour from downtown Tokyo.

You have to go pretty far into the Shanghai suburbs to find similarly priced equivalents - and those tend to have useless layouts.

    Peter P,

With the use of some frosted glass panels, a bathroom can easily double as a greenhouse.

    Owneroccupier,

I always assumed the Japanese use their tatami rooms as a emergency guest room or some sort of multifunctional room/den for the family.

House! You were lucky to live in a house! We used to live in one room, all twenty-six of us, no furniture, 'alf the floor was missing, and we were all 'uddled together in one corner for fear of falling.

Oh, we used to dream of livin' in a corridor! Would ha' been a palace to us. We used to live in an old water tank on a rubbish tip. We got woke up every morning by having a load of rotting fish dumped all over us! House? Huh.

You were lucky. We lived for three months in a paper bag in a septic tank. We used to have to get up at six in the morning, clean the paper bag, eat a crust of stale bread, go to work down t' mill, fourteen hours a day, week-in week-out, for sixpence a week, and when we got home our Dad would thrash us to sleep wi' his belt.

And you try and tell the young people of today that ..... they won't believe you.

I don't know about Sushi, but in the summertime, Silicon Valley becomes the Valley of the Wok as everyone sizzles on the griddle like stir fry vegetables on the hot highways and byways of congested traffic.

Same thing here in Phoenix known as the "Valley of Sun."

Perhaps the question should be: in the Valley of the Wok, what sort of stir fry vegetable are you?

is this you, Peter P.? Are you really Tanith T.? hmmm?

on australian beef, i think it's more fatty than standard american beef, so it doesn't export so well - americans apparently like to drink water with their steak, which then congeals the fat if it's particularly fatty - the idea of a marbled steak is to give the steak flavour when it's cooked... so i wonder if it's just a preference thing...
