The San Bruno explosion and fire seems to be centered about here. Map of the area at the bottom of this page.

I actually live about 3 blocks away. It was the craziest thing I've ever seen in my life. Transformer boxes popping, the whole area covered in ash.
The actual fire ball was the craziest thing I've ever seen, it hurt your eyes if you looked at it too much. The whole area is basically decimated.

Meh. That area was overpriced anyways. $650k-$700k for boxes. Power outages are very common. It seems the utility systems are poorly maintained. Lucky for the banks! An insurance company will come rebuild/remodel the homes. THEN they can foreclose with minimal loss.
All listings in that neighborhood have been removed from the MLS.

Hey, I see opportunity. You might be able to pick up some cheap land after the fire especially inheritance properties. No?

I see opportunity as well. But I would assume most of these owners had insurance. I guess insurance companies can work with banks and give them some shadow inventory as replacement homes? Or will the insurance companies just give them a loaner home while they rebuild?
I work about a mile from this place. They have just released us from work early due to air quality...

Yeah, they were issuing voluntarily evacuations. Looks like it is all contained now. The roar and size of the inferno was shocking.
I have some pics I took about a block away from my house.

This community is really close knit. I grew up with a lot of people that lost their houses. Every one here has lived here their whole lives and this is a tragedy.

The pictures I took were from the gas station. The initial reports were that the gas station exploded and I ran home because if that was the case it would've got to my house.
People were also saying airplane engine or airplane crash. It was clear the fire was being fed it sounded like thunder.
I was really impressed by the Peninsula Fire Departments and CDF. They were literally water bombing the fire. Every minute they would drop the red stuff on it and helicopters were refilling and just dropping every minute. It didn't do much until PG&E finally shut off the gas and then it subsided.

My friend was taking pictures from the same area as you. He lives nearby but was just a passing by. He was with some class mates and I found it amusing that they are all training to become firefighters. They were all willing to help if needed :)

Only worry is that the houses nearby are affected (water in sides house etc) in certain ways although not damaged.

I'm sure it is a possibility because they were just dropping water all over the place.

As of this morning it was all still taped off when I was driving to work. I'm going to get off early just because a lot of my friends right now don't have homes.

I tried on my way after work. It's blocked off. Maybe you can catch a glimpse driving on Skyline Blvd. But not going up from San Bruno Avenue. I had to make a U-Turn back down.

My father was working in Oakland when the explosion happened, he told me he could see light from it flickering from the other side of the bay.

Let's remember, people's lives were lost yesterday...have some compassion as opposed to seeing an "opportunity."

I'm sure he was being snarky, and certainly meant no harm. Humor gets us through the darkest hours. It's a damn shame, what happened.

Oh yes we did! We had bags packed, and arrangements made to stay at a friends house. I saw several neighbors leaving in a hurry. I could see the whole thing from my living room, and was waiting to see if the fire came my way. All the aircraft flying overhead made it a long night.

What is your major malfunction? Come on man, people lost everything, in a FLASH and lives were lost, are you kidding me, talking about $$$ Time and PLACE ya this is Patrick.net and we talk values and all, BUT shelf it and or have some compassion. Gezz, am I the only one feeling a few of these guys are seemly pretty callous. If I am wrong, sorry but on the other hand, if you agree with me, please guys think and feel a little.

Cvoc13,
I was just going to post something to similar effect, when I saw your comment here at the bottom. I'm really ashamed of some of the people here. This has nothing to do with real estate, and has everything to do with a tragic event where people should be supportive instead of vindictive. Kudos to you for being the first to post that sentiment.

I lived at 1106 Fairmont Dr in San Bruno for the first 7 yrs of my life. It was one the houses lost. I am so sorry for all the people in my old neighborhood. I think it would be very hard to go back even if my house were still standing.

It was insensitive of me to make the above statement. I apologize for myself and on behalf of Vain.
Thanks Ellie for coming to the rescue :o)

The San Andreas Fault runs right through this broken pipe area. Actually right through the San Bruno Fire Department on that map.
