In a stunning show of force and determination, the Obama Justice Department has closed down a major threat to national security; Amish unpasteurized milk. The Feds conducted a yearlong "sting" operation in which they caught the dastardly Amish selling their milk to American citizens that wanted to buy it. Isn't it wonderful to know that the hope & change Obama Administration has its priorities in order?

Back in rural Georgia I remember sometimes hearing about people being shut down for not meeting various codes. One lady was my friend's sister, who was selling goat cheese and milk. This was a while back under a Republican administration. Technically speaking this is not originating in Justice, they are FDA operations. They are doing what they are charged with doing. But please continue looking for Commies behind every bush, it is entertaining.

I applaud the justice department and hope they continue to ignore anti-American right wing nuts like yourself. Today, just about 0.5 percent of all the milk consumed in this country is unpasteurized. Yet from 1998 to 2008, the U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention received reports of 85 infectious disease outbreaks linked to raw milk. In the past few months, physicians have treated salmonella in Utah, brucellosis in Delaware, campylobacter in Colorado and Pennsylvania, and an ugly outbreak of E. coli O157-H7 in Minnesota, which sickened eight people in June. Epidemiologists not only identified a rare strain of the bacteria but matched its DNA to those stricken, the cows on the farm that supplied them with raw milk, and manure smearing the milking equipment and even the animals themselves. When regulators shut down the dairy farm, supporters promptly charged them with belonging to a government conspiracy to smear the reputation of a hallowed food. It wasn't until 1914—compelled by a typhoid epidemic linked to unpasteurized milk—that New York City finally enforced a pasteurization rule. Seven years later, the city's infant death rate, which had hovered at an appalling 240 of every 1,000 live births, had dropped to 71 deaths per 1,000, a victory many credited to pasteurization.

I'm sure Ray is all for the free market working over there too. Police at least in my part of the country do not run their own kangaroo courts. It's been my understanding from civics which is a bit dated, that government agencies do investigations but criminal prosecutions are the province of Justice.

What you really meant to say is the justice department is filled with openly altruistic and reasonable individuals who gave this farmer repeated warnings and many months to correct his violations of the LAW before finally and regrettably shutting him down so people wouldn't become sick with tainted milk. Some people pay up to 10-12 times the price of pasteurized just to get their fix. Historically the center of raw milk production has been California, we even defined 3 grades of it. That's interesting, why was the average lifespan half of today's then? I don't understand the issue Ray. You are all for law and order, unless Obama does it. Americans are perfectly free to buy unpasteurized milk in the 10 states that allow it. Seems to me the people want to buy it elsewhere should be doing something about changing the state laws involved, not complaining about the FDA doing it's job. The only reason the Federal government is involved is the transactions are across state lines, not because of some nefarious plot by the Obama administration. That's supposedly the whole point of the Federal Government, interstate commerce. Get a life.

Take food labels for just one glaring example: Food producers are allowed by the FDA to use a very misleading labeling system when it comes to disclosing fat in a product. The FDA allows fat to be labeled by percentage against the weight of a product. In order for the consumer to get the real percentage, they have to look at the calories per serving and the amount of calories of FAT per serving, then do long division in order to determine the REAL percentage of fat for the product. Example: if a product has 100 calories per serving and has 50 calories of fat per serving, the product is 50% (artery clogging) fat. And yet, the product may state that it is "97% fat free." Don't believe it? 2% Milk is thought to contain only 2% milk fat, when in reality, it typically contains 120 calories per serving with 45 calories from fat ... making it 37.5% fat. Yet the American people have been duped into believing they are consuming milk that is 98% fat free. This is true for practically every food label that contains fat ... and the FDA is "doing its job." LOL

They want quality milk, and they are getting it, but it is maybe slightly risky. For the big milk producers the standard is much lower (I'll spare you the disgusting details) so with the lower quality mass produced milk, that has god knows what in it, it must be pasteurized for safety reasons.

(milk sugar in dairy products) No mammal produces lactase after it weans. This seems to indicate that consuming milk and dairy products is virtually unnatural, not to mention the obscenely elevated and problematic fat content. Lactose intolerance has been known to cause painful intestinal bleeding in some individuals. Got indigestion?

You can't have it both ways. Where are your posts about the lack of transparency in the "Bush government"? You don't even begin to see the problem with your obsession with criticizing Obama for doing many of the same things that you approved of Bush doing do you? They are both pretty poor presidents in my opinion. Bush marginally worse just because his entire administration was so secretive, vicious, and mean spirited.

They're not sure what "it" is, but a quick search can turn up anything. Obama's responsible for gas prices (even tho they were higher under Bush's second term, even without factoring in inflation), the recession (created long before Obama took office), bailouts (Bush era), the extensions of bush era tax cuts to the super wealthy, and many, many more. Personally, I blame Obama for the lousy cell service in rural areas. Of course, I shall now add to my list of Obamatravesties all things milk related, including that I can't find Strawberry Quick on the shelves of my grocery store. That's simply not acceptable. Trolls are angry little buggers who simply want to say nasty stuff so that they can create drama - and when they're unoriginal and unable to begin a thread that people will post to, they hijack others. If they're placed on "ignore" and truly ignored, the forum is a lot more fun. Or we can continue to respond to silliness. 'sup to ya'll.
