This ruling also means that drug makers can start substituting ingredients patented by other drug makers, to void any liability from them, if the drugs are latter found to have dangerous side effects. They could then say, well it's probably from ingredient "X" made by company "Z" that is causing the ill effects. "Our research shows our formula works, it's all science. I've got a chart if you'd like."

Back in the 70's Proposition 13 advocates said the tax cuts would result in lower rents. Didnt' happen, landlords pocketed the money and kept rents marching upward.
Airlines were just given a "tax holiday" due to the deficit nonsense, not being required currently to collect some FAA fees. Only a few of them offered their customers tickets at new lower prices, all the rest simply whistled and thanked their lucky stars for this windfall.
I'd expect your hopes for pharms generously cutting profits will be about as fruitful.

Simvastatin (Zocor) has been available as generic for years and works just as well as Lipitor in 99% of cases. All "statins" lower cholesterol by the same pharmacological mechanism. I pay $5 per month for mine and have for years.
Did you know that the expensive brand-name prescription Clarinex is functionally equivalent to OTC Claratin? That the expensive PPI Nexium is the same as the OTC Prilosec? There's many such examples and if your doctor doesn't know the difference then it's up to you to do some market research...or ask Uncle Nomo.
