7 years ago, the Mororola RAZR rejuvanted the Mortorola brand. It was thin and sleek and was a must have phone, like the Iphone is now.

Well, 7 years later, the DROID RAZR is coming to Verizon soon and AT&T next. It is thin, sleek and powerful. I always felt that the Iphone 4 was superior because the display is just so freakin clear and a difference maker, albeit too small and useless for me, but the RAZR will sport the same quality display on a 30-40% bigger screen. It's a buy for me.

I think the DROID RAZR will be a hit and rejuvinate the Motorola brand once again. Especially since MMI is a stand alone phone company now with the full backings of Google, thoughts?

The RAZR does look super cool, and if I were to need a new phone today that is what I would get.

However, I think that it will have some competition from the Nexus Prime (slated for release soonish?), that also has a larger and better display than the iPhone 4.

While I think it will be a hit, I don't think it will be a "dominating" hit as was the original RAZR or the iPhones.

The iPhone's display I think is somewhat dense -- something over 300 ppi. The Motorola Droid Bionic's is pretty close I think. It's a 4.3" display that is qHD like the Droid RAZR, but the Droid RAZR's is AMOLED whereas the Droid Bionic's is TFT LCD like the iPhone, although bigger and Pentile. I've also heard that Bionic's colors are supposed to be more true than AMOLED, but can't confirm that.

My impression is that the RAZR is similar to the Bionic, but has the AMOLED screen, a Kevlar back, the slightly tapered shape, a 4460 processor instead of 4430 (both are dual core), and is thinner.

I think the other advantage both Moto phones have over iPhones is that they are both 4G.

The downside is really how Google and the manufacturers who use Android deal with Android. Even a 3G iPhone will run the latest iPhone OS, and they are several years old. However, most manufacturers will stop supporting an Android phone fairly quickly and won't provide very many substantive updates to the OS after that point. This means that you can have a 6 month old Android phone that is 2 versions of Android behind quite easily, and possibly even 3 versions behind.

Partly this is because the manufacturers have already gotten paid and have no incentive, but it creates a crappy customer experience and makes someone less likely to buy that company's phone again when an expensive 6-month old product goes obsolete so quickly. Your only solution is to root the phone (and void your remaining warranty) to have an updated device.

Apple also has gotten paid and has no incentive, but they realize that if you are happy with a current iPhone product, you are also likely to buy an Apple product in the future. It's sad that Google and its developers don't have the same attitude -- Android really suffers as a platform because of this. Well, that and because Google isn't really standing behind Android, but that's another discussion.
