A while back, Vicente had an excellent "Bike Porn" thread. Since many in this forum live near water, I decided to start a Kayak thread. Please share any of your own Kayak mods, or even info on canoes or Kayaks you have built from scratch.

I could not load this pic of the full Kayak when I made the thread, so I'll try here.

I like that stereo because it has an SD card slot instead of a CD (also has Aux input and Thumb Drive slot). I do not know why the major brands do not do this. This stereo was only $25 at Walmart, and the marine speakers less than $20 at Bass Pro. I did not want to put in high cost stuff since I am mostly in salt water and did not know if it would ruin.

Sound is actually quite good. That UPS battery has no trouble powering both the 5 in Garmin GPS and stereo for several long trips. The GPS last for about 3.5 hours before I have to plug it in to my AUX jack.

The GPS tells me my speed, and I can see it OK, but I had to park under a bridge to take a visible photo.

It's pretty stable, rides wakes and waves well. Some fellows even reel in 3-4 foot cobias in their kayaks without rolling the boat.

Already proven splashproof, though.

Since boats are all "shes," is it a lesbo orgy?

Seems to me that the car stereo is a little overkill !! Nice touch though. Plus, the weight of it, and the battery...

Why not an ipod/smartphone connected to speakers? If radio is your concern - you could probably do internet radio through a phone.

Either way, nice yak !

Can an ipod/smartphone power speakers? I thought they only had a headphone jack. With only a headphone jack, I would need an amp of some sort to drive the speakers. If I use powered speakers that have an internal battery, I'd have to make them splashproof somehow.

Now there is a philisophical issue! I do not have a mobile phone data plan, just like I do not have cable. Why pay for mobile data when I get free WiFi when traveling, and why pay for cable when I get 20 channels of free 1080i TV from an antenna hooked to the house coax system? I do have a plain old non-smart mobile phone provided by my employer.

I could see where someone may use a mobile phone data plan as their sole connect, coupling the mobile phone and a hotspot device to supply voice/data, internet, and TV, both at home and on the road.

I've seen much smaller speakers that are battery powered - but they probably don't sound nearly as nice as what you currently have : )

Same here - but most people do have data plans and figured you would as well.

Ever surf kayak'd?

No, I like relatively smooth water, fast paddling and enjoying the scenery. I do know a couple who take out their 12 ft "Ocean" kayaks to joy ride over tall waves and white caps. Not my cup of tea.
