Time to mobilize the National Guard.

2   HEY YOU   2012 Dec 15, 9:45am

If they make sure their demonstration is legal, they can appear any place they fucking please. Then there are some that don't believe in freedom of speech & assembly.

A simpler solution with less effort:
Take the time to list all Republican local businesses & all national corporations that gave one cent to Republicans, spread the list to all your supporters & then don't spend any money in any of these businesses. OH! Maybe this is Democracy. Vote with your Dollar.

Hell! Go Rouge. Don't associate with Republican friends or family. Don't look at them or speak to them. Let them know as the great President George Bush said : You're either with us or against us.

Mish, I'm sure some of your clients or would be clients are 1%ers who want to kill unions because of their greed, and their willingness to give up on America. They are world citizens, and since the US will soon be majority non-white, they could care less if we become a third world fascist state.

But the fact that you endorse this with such an embarrassing lack of logic and facts is I guess, not that surprising.

Five Ways Collective Bargaining Tramples Various Unalienable Rights

Collective bargaining agreements take away the right of individuals to pursue a career of their dreams void of union affiliation
Collective bargaining agreements force individuals into organizations against the free will of those members
Collective bargaining agreements force union dues out of members who do not even want to belong
Collective bargaining agreements dictate what members can and cannot do with their free time.
Collective bargaining agreements even dictate what non-members can and cannot do with their free time!

I don't know what to say, except,... wow.

Wrong to varying degree on all counts.

Typical of Marcus...if you don't agree with me, you're a racist.

Read again....Marcus is saying that Mish and his readers will not care about America or the people once the country is majority non white. That's a typical accusation of racism by Marcus.

It's funny how this statement can be read both ways. One is that Mish's clients are greedy and self-centered, and the other is that union members are greedy and self-centered. The truth probably lies somewhere in the middle.

I have a pretty dim view of police and firefighter unions here in California. They use scare tactics against the public, and never *ever* admit that one of their members has completely screwed up. It's too bad I spent so many years pursuing advanced degrees and working long hours in tech when I could have just gotten a 2 year degree in criminology, joined the 5-0, and retired at 50 with a six-figure pension.

That being said, I'm sure there is a big spectrum of unions, with the California police and firefighters being at the far "greedy bastard" end of the spectrum.

Ah. It was subtle.

I have been thinking about the same thing since I read the thread.

I think unions in the private sector are okay. If the company management negotiates a contract not in their favor, it's their own fault. Reduced profitability is the outcome. In the end, the only people that will (should) suffer are the shareholders and the employees of that company.

Public unions are different though. Politicians seem to give them whatever they want because they have nothing to lose. The only people who get screwed are the taxpayers.

Well said!

13   marcus   2012 Dec 16, 5:11am

We have a system that allows for changing public worker compensation or benefits should they get too high. Unions are just the ones who will represent or negotiate on behalf of the workers when this occurs.

Those who want to do away with unions all together don't realize what they are advocating because it happens kind of slowly.

It's true that we could pay public workers less, but it's not true that we would get the same quality of people in these jobs (unless possibly the economy stays as it is now (with the same wealth inequality and the same high unemployment levels)).

(Note: High unemployment - depression level unemployment is the perfect time for plutocrats to push for lower wages. Regardless of the record breaking profits they are now experiencing)

Cheap labor is, in the end good for corporations (and in a very myopic frame of reference, for the tax payers too). But what kind of income will the middle class tax payers have ? Yes, there is a chicken and egg question buried in these questions.

What those myopic greedy (this year's bottom line) interests don't consider enough, is that our own domestic economic demand is deeply hurt if we keep ratcheting wages lower.

Exaggerate much?

His statement shows how much our cops firemen and teachers are appreciated. Likening them to welfare recipients...

Typical union thugs.

Did you see the "principled stand" that the GOP took against public safety unions in Michigan. Police and fire salaries & benefits are killing municipal budgets, so I'm sure they are part of the reform. Oh wait... The Michigan measure carves out an exception for police and firefighters...

Greed is good. Greed is never evil.

Greed competes with greed. Goodness for all.

20   woppa   2012 Dec 17, 5:40am

LOL sad.

21   swebb   2012 Dec 17, 7:01am

I'm generally in support of unions. I think the outcomes they create are often bad for them (Detroit, for one. Boston used to be a big trade show town and the unions chased the business away)..but I have never understood why "right to work" laws were controversial at all. I was surprised to hear there was even such a thing. Of course I should be able to work somewhere and decide whether or not I want to join the union.

If conditions get bad enough, I'll join the union, if things are pretty good, I'll stay out. Self governing feedback system. Seems like a pretty good compromise to me.

22   zzyzzx   2012 Dec 17, 9:06am

rooemoore says

By buying stock and voting against bloated executive pay.
I swear, except one time, every proxy vote I have ever gotten includes a raise for these overpaid CEO's and BOD members. If enough people actually voted in these things it would work.

Open up your own company and compete against them, since you would now have a competitive advantage with no bloated CEO pay.

Mish lied when he said they threatened the governor's daughter. If he is lying about that, what else is he lying about?
