that would make hawaii the best place to live!

if life expectancy is the only determining factor then yes. but Hawaii doesn't have the world leading high tech powerhouse in Silicon Valley, Hollywood, etc.

and honolulu kicks the crap out of ANY place in california! longer life, better beaches, better scenery, cleaner air, more fun, better public transit....

problem with Hawaii is that your world is restricted to ~30 miles in each direction.

It's a nice world, but I think I need more.

Las Vegas has the same problem IMO, though S Utah is not too far away, and that's very nice as far as nature goes.

But I like the smell of the pacific forests . . . I need the trees . . .

Why in god's name would you WANT to live in Hollywood? Aside from the fact that people have heard of it, where is the appeal of a traffic-riddled, smoggy, pretentious place like that?

The much-praised Silicon Valley is also home to a very high concentration of Superfund sites. Do a google search for "bay area superfund sites" and see how many reports come up linking high incidences of cancer to living in high-priced areas like MV and PA. Hell, a big water resources report that concluded a year ago found that people living in the MV/PA area had a statistically significant increase in Alzheimer's rates if they lived in concrete slab buildings versus ones with air-spaces due to chemicals leeching from the ground. So, enjoy that higher life expectancy. It probably won't seem all that long to you when you can't remember anything that happened more than 10 minutes ago.

That list also makes no mention of error margin or variance. CA is #3, and there is a 1 year difference between #3 and #18. I am more than willing to bet that a single standard deviation in the data is much more than 1 year. What is the point of posting this in the RE section? It looks to me like someone is trying to justify something.

only if they retire in CA. again, life expectancy does not mean median age. those who find it difficult to retire here can move to a state with a lower cost of living. no one is forcing the poorer retirees to live here.

i'm sure if people could get the same type of job in Mississipi and not pay any state income taxes, they would have moved there already.

many people here keep saying how terrible CA is and this thread explains why RE in CA is expensive, because it is a better place to live (hence longer life expectancy)

home prices in CA are up 7.5% Y-o-Y, inventory is significantly low and forclosures are also down. no pumping is required.

This is a conclusory statement. You haven't provided a correlation between longer life expectancy and a location being "a better place to live".

And based on your logic, real estate prices in Minnesota should be higher than real estate prices in California because life expectancy is ever so slightly higher in Minnesota.

Not to mention most folks would happily trade 5 months at the end of their life to lives to live in a very nice $500k house in Colorado versus a crappy shitbox house in Silicon Valley.

if there is one single indicator for the level of quality of life, it would be life expectancy. life expectancy indicates living conditions.

Minnesota doesn't have the type of high paying jobs that CA has so home prices there aren't as high. but nothing wrong with my logic, pick a state with the same level of pays as those of Minnesota and you should see lower home prices there.

you didn't tell the other half of the story: most people in the country would love to spend most of their working adult life living in SV making $200-500K/year than living in CO and making like $50K/year. a lot of hate on SV and it's unhealthy considering SV is the ONLY real competitive edge the U.S has vs the rest of the world.

auto industry - Germany, Japan
electronics - Japan, Korea, Taiwan
everything else - China

beside IT, what does the U.S have to compete with the rest of the world? i don't see a lot of gratitude in here.

From Trading Economics:
United States is the world's third largest exporter. Main exports are: machinery and equipment, industrial supplies, non-auto consumer goods, motor vehicles and parts, aircraft and parts, food, feed and beverages. Main exports partners are: Canada, European Union, Mexico, China and Japan.

Don't let facts confuse you.

16   bmwman91   2012 Dec 19, 6:49am

lol

SV is home to web bubble 1.0, and soon enough 2.0. Grateful? For what, a bunch of short-sighted, money chasing douche-bags that don't understand the difference between "living" and "making money"? Greed and short sightedness have ruined America, decades ago. The things that made this nation great are mostly dead, or are in the process of dying now. Everyone bought the lie that material goods are the only path to happiness, and the results of that are being reaped now. Immigrants still love coming here because there are still MUCH worse places on earth to be. I am certainly grateful that I don't live in shit-hole China. At the same time, I am pissed that America is flushing itself down the toilet because everyone is too damn lazy and undisciplined to live a slightly lower, sustainable lifestyle. It's all just a bunch of "fuck you I got mine" idiocy and we will all pay the price for it. It's already happening. America will be just another cesspool of inequality and willful ignorance before long, much like many other parts of the world. If living in CA makes you feel good, then more power to you. There are lots of amazing natural resources here that are worth paying more to live near. Aside form the occasional earthquake, CA does not have natural disasters. Except for the people that live here, that is.

You put everything into terms of money-earning for how you justify how good some place is. That's sort of sad. Most people share that view, so feel good in being part of the majority. It's the same majority that thinks that way that has killed America. "I got mine and I want more." We have collectively sold our freedom and independence.

I am not going to pretend to be under any sort of illusion that being born and raised here entitles me to live here. Things change, people get booted out of their homes by invasive new demographics. It's happened countless times throughout history. Hell, America was founded on it, literally. It's just annoying as hell, and the internet was invented for complaining (and porn)!

these are main exports, but how many percent they are of GDP?

how many percent compared to software, handheld devices, Telecom equipment & services, PC, Macs, etc.? we are using our own products when it comes to these things, imagine what would happen if we could no longer take them for granted and had to import them?

fact is these exports are only a small part of GDP. and it's not like other countries can't build these machines as they are easy to reverse engineer. i would say the main reason we can still export heavy machinery is because of the metal mines in the U.S. it's very difficult to copy an Intel chip, but some heavy lifter? pffftt the Japanese and the Germans can do it overnight.

unlike some the idiots who keep staying and complaining non-stop like they are some kind of victim

I'd say that reasonable people are "victims" in some parallel abstract way that native Americans were (obvious atrocities aside). It'll get chocked up to "victims of circumstance". Maybe we do fit some definition of the word, but it does not matter in the end. If the "greed is good" paradigm is the one that rules the day, then that's just the way it is. Thankfully, freedom of speech is alive and well and I can moan about it all over the intertubes.

You mentioned being "grateful" for America. I am. Life here, despite the irritations, is damn good compared to much of the rest of the world. The part that makes me mad is seeing that, as you say, so many people DO take it for granted. A direct result of this is the short-sightedness and greed that is rampant all over. If people actually saw and appreciated what freedom and liberty are, and that those definitions are NOT confined solely to "making money", they would act differently. This behavior will be the end of this once great place. It's like watching someone you care about get hooked on meth and run them self into oblivion. Doom and gloom, I know. It all just looks to me like the insanity is intensifying, and I don't really see any positive outcomes from that.

as long as they let the average person have just enough not to riot.

That's sort of a sad outlook for the future. I would hope for better, personally. Now, if that is a god-send compared to where one may have immigrated from, then it is understandable to be happy with it. If too many people accept that as gospel, then maintaining even that will be a challenge because those that built this into a great place had a different vision of the future. Maybe America had things TOO good and we are in the inexorable slide back to some more sustainable level. A lot of what America has, materially, was obtained through militarism which isn't so popular anymore.

Mark D says

a lot of the immigrants came from much poorer countries so making a ton of money as a way to protect themselves from the things they experienced in their home countries is a natural tendency. they are not the average American so this is one of the things i wouldn't pass judgement.

A good friend of mine whose parents came from Vietnam described something similar. People come over here and are permanently set in "survival mode." Grab all that you can through any means because someone else will if you don't, and rob/kill you. They have been conditioned to it and don't understand that it is not entirely necessary here. It is usually gone within a generation, as their son proved anyway. I can't claim to fully understand that because I was fortunate enough to be born into an American middle class family where, relative to my friend's parents, I was handed everything. I've tried to imagine it, but that only gets one so far if they have not lived it. I "get" that I don't get it 100%.

Mark D says

and i would say life doesn't stop because i can't buy a house. i would put the money in the stock market and retire early.

Timing is everything. There is no magic formula. Now, looking at things objectively right now, I would say that you might be right. The Fed has demonstrated that they have no higher priority than pumping RE and equities. As long as you time your exit right, you may retire early!

It is easy to get super negative when looking at things. People seem to find it easy to dwell on bad news, for whatever reason. Overall, I am not all that concerned about the future. We'll make things work, one way or another. It seems like we end up fighting ourselves through short-sighted decisions, and as a person that likes to make logic-based decisions, it can get really irritating to see people with so much opportunity willingly throw away so much of their mental capacity to indulge in temporary delights.
