"Salaries for class of 2012 college grads are up 3.4% over the pay of those who graduated a year earlier, according to a survey released Thursday. The survey from the National Association of Colleges and Employers showed the average salary of new grads at $44,455. It was the best year-over-year rise in starting salary since the class of 2008."

Huzzah! Happy news for those that majored in something with an actual career path!

2   lostand confused   2013 Jan 10, 10:10am

Well with CA in a budget surplus-was 2010 the real estate bottom?

3   lostand confused   2013 Jan 10, 10:24am

Or perhaps real estate might go down again, since I am finally losing hope of seeing fair prices !

Just when the buzz says college isnt worth it! Maybe it is!

Median Income of recent college graduate is $18,373, $6,000 less than a cashier at McDonalds?

So Mcdonalds cashiers are making $24,373 these days? Assuming no time off (52 weeks) and 40 hours per week, that is $11.72 per hour.

Simply bogus. In fact, I would wager that a huge percentage of these workers are getting minimum wage. That is $7.25 an hour federally, varying by state, up to $9.19 in Washington State. Nearly $2.50 less than stated in the highest state. Some states even have minimum wages less than the federal rates.

Therefore, without having to dig into the other numbers on that frugaldad.com poster, its almost all bullshit.

"Starting pay for new graduates climbed 3.4% compared to a year earlier, with engineering students pulling down highest starting salary. "

We're talking about 2012 right? Wasn't that the same year, when CNN ran an article every week about how engineers don't make any money, and Patnet was parroting it?

Everything is open for revision, when America's realities are all speculation.

That HUGE graphic is flawed in so many ways, it undermines a serious problem.

First way more than 1/2 of the country forgoes college because of price.
That graphic says 1 in 2 students skip college because it is expensive.
I wouldn't be surprised if less if college participation was less than 20% of those graduating HS.

Then there's the graphic showing how many cups of coffee a Starbucks employee would have to serve to pay for college. Now I'm not privy to first hand knowledge of the Starbucks pay structure, but I'd be willing to wager, they aren't paid by the piece, and not all Starbucks have the same volume of business from location to location.

National Association of Colleges and Employers... nope, no bias there!

NOW is a great time to buy a degree! (or a house)

There's is a lot of political number fudging on both sides of the issue.

I'm quite certain that anyone with the aptitude and knack for the profession or vocation they chose will do quite well. Where as everyone that defaults to choose to study(X) as their only option to climbing in the back of their Dad's landscaping business truck. Wont do as well as those that chose their passion.

I think making a 17-18 year old kid, decide what they want to do for the rest of their life, in a time when they are least certain about their identity. Is a sick societal joke.(well actually the career path choosing begins way earlier 15-16 for many families.)

I think the College selection process shouldn't even happen until after graduation. Kids should focus on grades as if they were trying to be accepted to the best schools in the nation. But then those people should be able to take 5 to 10 years to discover them selves after graduation, and still be able to use their Grades from when they graduated to get a scholarship when they are ready.

That hardly means that wage inflation has begun. Unemployment can be down. People could be switching from McDonald's to other jobs. The stat is only about recent college grads, who do not reflect the job market at large.

In IT ive never seen them hire a recent grad, just ever higer percent of experienced chindian h1b. White guy in IT is now minority in LA area. Mecxicans in IT dont even exist, lol.

Now compare that to some European and Asian countries where the 'selection' process occurs even earlier.
Meanwhile in oil country [Montana], some teenagers are choosing the oil fields over universities, forgoing higher education for jobs with salaries that can start at $50,000 a year.

Folks, thanks to loser HR types, today's paralegal requires some bachelor's degree, even if it's basket weaving or ancient Etruscan (pre-Roman) bong making. I guess the latter could just call himself a history major.

In the past, starting paralegals simply had an associates degree. What magically changed, a dozen years ago, which forced 'em to be 4 yr college degree holders?

Thus, any career, where one's an *office person*, needs a college degree. It's now a class/cultural vs actual demarcation.

Tiger parents want to make sure that their children can afford $888,888 shitboxes in the future. What route is better than buying a $1,888,888 shitbox in Palo Alto right now?

a friend of mine (born & raised in the U.S - aka spoiled, not really a hard working immigrant) went to 4 year university in California to study "advertising" and she used to make fun of me when i complained how difficult school was (being a Comp Sci major and working an almost full time IT job). she said college to her was easy and she was surprised it was so tough for me. i said nothing.

well few years later, my company gave me a full time software engineer job before i even graduated with decent pay while she had to work for an attorney office as a receptionist after graduation making minimum wage because she couldn't find a job for her BS major.

then one time she had to work in the other office near my apartment at the time and she wanted to sleep at my place for a month. i charged her rent and let her sleep on the floor in the living room. she knows who has the last laugh.

It has more to do with will than the degree.

Working hard is good only if you havr found your grooves. Most people have no idea.

To a point. I doubt even the world's best Renfaire handmade leather mug maker rakes in much over six figures.
