Actually, no it's not. There's always some asshole that has a grudge against you for some perceived slight. That asshole will make up stories and get your ass arrested. This is how we got the vast majority of "suspected terrorists" from Afghanistan. Assholes making shit up about their neighbors so that the Americans will take the neighbor away and the asshole then can take his goats.

Just don't do anything wrong, then you don't have anything to worry about.

That and avoid facebook and other outlets where people openly offer up pretty much anything and everything about themselves and their friends. For free. No, seriously, people do that lol

Like this. http://edition.cnn.com/2006/LAW/11/29/mayfield.suit/ He's lucky the Spanish insisted he was innocent or he's still be in jail.

We KNOW that police, DMV personnel, bank officials, etc. frequently use the information at their disposal to look up girlfriends, boyfriends, ex-girlfriends, ex-husbands, etc.

Why would NSA employees be any different? If they were caught, do you think the government would freely tell everybody, or cover it up to protect their datamining operations? "Listen, we can't let anybody know that Joe Schmoe the NSA contractor's employee spent 8 hours looking through the emails of his landlord who is trying to keep his deposit, trying to find some dirt on him."

We already know from other whistleblowers that government agents got off listening to soldier-wife / journalist-wife sexy phone calls and shared the "Greatest Hits" around the office.

Dude this is the Internet, we make up laws as we go along.

A woman as brown as football with a pasty white daughter, shows up at a tanning salon? LOCK her up and throw away the Goddamn KEY!

Father shoots his disrespectful daughter's laptop? Find out he's a judge then get him disbarred.

Guy duct tapes his son to the wall, the kid laughing like hell the whole time, snap a pic and put it on Facebook? Oh my God get the FBI to track that monster down and throw him under the jail!

Daughter rides in the back of the pick up truck with her dogs, a motorist snaps a pic and puts it on the internet?
OH THE OUTRAGE! How dare they! Who in the hell does that family think they are out joy ridding South Carolina mountains style, where every family who owned a pick up truck has had their kid at one time or the other ride in the back of a pick up truck.

Who needs laws when Crowdjustice will suffice?

if you don't have a Middle Eastern last name you don't have to worry about any of these.

How wrong you are. I no longer have a facebook account because I once had a business associate who had a friend (who happened to be a police officer) 'check me out my facebook page'. He actually went through my facebook page, found my friends, used their system to get my friends contact info and called them, using some made up story. I start getting these emails from my friends asking about this weird guy and why I gave him their phone numbers..

They will use your information someday, because they can...

I had a contract job at a gay dating site once (hey, it was a good job) and was impressed that they simply did not keep log files.

So there wasn't much to turn over to the NSA.

You can check out the Tor source code yourself - takes a while and some programming skillz, but it works. That and only build yourself from the previously inspected sources ;)

Sure, but in that scenario the boring are playing a numbers game whereas the interesting have likely already been dealt with.

One day a month should be dedicated as 'Talk Like a Terrorist Day' in which everyone would call friends on the phone and send them emails detailing embassy attacks, bombings, hijackings, jaywalking, etc and people on the street would be encouraged to shout anti-American slogans and their plans for blowing up Ft Meade, etc.

Nay, if you really want to distract the NSA, have everyone have phone sex. Those NSA perves will be so busy wanking that they'll clog up all their keyboards.

"The problem is all inside your head", they said to me
Warrants are easy to get if you take it logically
I'd like to help you in your struggle to be free
There must be fifty ways to leave the NSA

They said it's really not our habit to intrude
Furthermore, I hope your files are particularly lewd
So I can wack off at the pictures, the ones where you are nude
There must be fifty ways to leave the NSA
Fifty ways to leave the NSA

Get your signal to piggy back, Jack
Get a pre-paid phone plan, Stan
Use code words that are coy, Roy
Just get yourself free
Encrypt traffic on the bus, Gus
You don't need to discuss much
Just use your private key, Lee
And get yourself free

They said why don't we both just sleep on it tonight
We need to monitor every discussion to shed the light
On terrorist plots, but no gun registry, that wouldn't be right
So the terrorist can kill us with guns, but not with words of might
And that's the craziest fucking thing that's ever been in my sight

Tor sponsors include US Government agencies and grants, though not the NSA as far as I know.

That may be a good idea for people who have those skills.

Because I think deficits matter.

The issue with National Security and spying is, while the agency tries to gather as much information as possible officially to protect us, the culture of learned helplessness makes us less secure. Back in the days of civil defense, Americans were expected to be prepared. It's interesting to observe the Republican party follow the NRA line about defending gun owners (actually manufacturers finance the NRA and the GOP), while ignoring the issue of vulnerability to hacking. Instead of thwarting strong encryption, NSA could improve national security by encouraging it, especially for banks etc. The fourth amendment matters as much as the second, and the first. What happens if the next NSA leaker sells backdoor keys to a hostile actor (state or non-state)? How secure is the currency if the banks or their customers can be hacked? In an information era, national security should build from the bottom up, with Americans and therefore America becoming harder targets. The opposite, a culture of frightened dependence, seems quite risky to me.

Update: see also Dan's new thread and software :)

Also, you might want to create a dead man's switch, especially if you host a site.
