Why crazy? I've been there and did poke into the lava with a stick. There were rangers guiding people. Nothing dangerous really.

One false toss and you are talking instant third degree burns if even a fleck landed on skin. Is fooling with lava amid potentially toxic gases worth a skin graft?
How long would you want a piece of that stuff on your nose?
