Last night I was sitting on the patio with several family members and guest, when my 5 year old Grandson asked my SIL's (enquote and parenthesis) "Friend"...

"Are you a Girl or a Boy?"

To which his 4 year old Sister chimes in, "Yeah which one is it?"

Before their mother came storming out of the house, (screaming his name), that's not a nice thing to ask someone!

The thing is we've always accepted "Lucy"(the Friend) and have never said anything out of the ordinary. It's almost like the Wife and her family are just pretending that if they ignore it, then it wont really be true.

Two things that struck me as Odd.

Firstly Jay, had no official concept of Gay or Straight, and it's not like we've been a family of homophobes who just plot against their relationship in earshot(or otherwise) of Jay for him to pick up on anything. We've never discussed their orientation or relationship Period.

Living in Los Angeles and having many friends and acquaintences who live "alternative lifestyles" has given me a firsthand look at kids growing up in environments that make people wring their hands (and push for restrictive legislation) in the name of "THE CHILDREN." The actual outcomes are usually QUITE the opposite of what the fearmongers expect.

Children of hippies tend to grow up "straight edge" against most drugs BUT NOT ALCOHOL OR TOBACCO.

Children of gay parents develop a sexual orientation along the same bell curve as the population at large- there is no indoctrination into gayness. Gay couples who adopt make excellent, doting parents.

Gay people who deny their feelings and marry hetero to meet family expectations can wind up deeply unhappy, along with everyone else around.

Children of strict conservatives are more likely to smoke, drink, have risky sex, and be a mess for several years out of the gate in their early 20s.

Children of cops are likely to have an NA key fob before age 18.

In our group of friends, there are 3-4 same sex couples, and you want to know something? First off, you cannot have too much gay. It's like having too much money or too much health.

Second, freedom does not "serve a purpose". Freedom is inherently good and should only be restricted to the extent of protecting other people's rights.

Third, there is nothing perverted about sex, gay or straight. Perversion is simply a derogatory term that hypocrites use when they don't want other people to have sexual experiences. Merely exposing a child to religion is worse than exposing the child to drugs or alcohol, as religion is even far more destructive. Taking a child to church, sending him to a religious school, reading from the Bible to him are all harmful. We don't let children drink alcohol because their brains aren't ready to handle it. The same is true for religion.

And by the way, we atheists are a hell of a lot better at teaching people right from wrong than the religious. Religion says right and wrong are whatever some fictitious god allegedly says is right and wrong. Modern humans have been around for 200,000 years. Humans in general have been around for more like 2 million years.

Here are just a few things that are not normal based on the long span of human existence.
1. Girls not being raped by age 12.
2. Rapists and murderers going to jail.
3. Christianity.
4. Law, police, court systems, prisons.
5. Antibiotics.
6. Lack of starvation.
7. Covering up breasts.
8. Covering up the penis when its not cold.
9. Permanent shelters.
10. Electricity.
11. Indoor plumbing. Hell, plumbing at all.
12. Not being killed by a sexual rival if you are male.
13. Having all your children making it to adulthood.
14. Guns.

Gun are perhaps the most unnatural and abnormal thing in our society. It used to be that in order to kill someone, you had to get your hands dirty. You had to get up close and personal. You had to take considerable risk including the risk of failing to kill the person and having to deal with the consequences of living with that person who at any time might kill you.

Guns make killing easier, less personal, less messy, less hands on. And psychologically, that makes a huge difference. The vast majority of people who would kill with a gun, would pussy out of killing a person by strangling him to death. That's a lot harder to do both physically and physiologically.

So, if we're talking about things that are not normal and are harmful, guns are way worse than even the most deluded fantasy of gays causing harm. Yet somehow, I doubt FortWayne will complain that guns are interfering with his right as a parent to raise his children normally.

I agree that guns make killing easier. It's less of a physical and psychological hurdle to cross to pull a trigger than to overpower and beat or stab someone to death.

Look back in history, Dan. Before guns, there were no successful democracies. Liberalism was a pipe dream. A well-equipped group of ten armored knights were nigh indestructible and could impose their will against any number of farmers and villagers without armor.
The English longbow was the first weapon to make strides toward self rule possible, as it was powerful enough in the hands of a yeoman (soldier drawn from common stock) to punch through armor or mail and kill a knight. Given this took a significant amount of skill, but not equipment, which was key.
All strides made toward easier to use weaponry have made life easier for the weak and the disenfranchised.
Random criminal violence is a sad byproduct of society, not so much guns.

Actually using tools, even ranged weapons, to kill isn't my point. What makes the gun unnatural and an abnormal way to kill based on the long history of our species is
1. It entails far less risk than our ancestors had to deal with.
2. It makes killing far less personal and we haven't evolved our morality to deal with this.
3. The asymmetry in power when dealing with guns is far greater than found in man's natural history. A person with a gun can kill dozens of people, whereas a person with a spear cannot. This makes the person with the gun behave very differently than the person with a spear.

These three things make guns something that our socially driven evolution has not yet dealt with. It's an unnatural tool as far as human evolution is concerned.

All I can say to that end is that I'm a patriotic American. I have had numerous members of my family who fought in WW1, WW2, Vietnam, and the Gulf War who did so in order in part to help uphold or protect the freedoms that some people here apparently do not believe in- that ALL Americans deserve the rights that the constitution guarantees them, and that ALL Americans are equal.
