When I was a kid I used to love flying. The awe of being able to travel so far, so fast, to look down at all of the cities and towns below me.

Somewhere along the way I lost that sense of wonder. Flying at first became a grind and then, somehow, a bit of a fearful experience. Granted the odds of something going catastrophically wrong on a flight are smaller than that of say, on my way to work every day. The difference is the lack of control. I trust my driving skills; the pilot I've never met.

Granted, I've never had a problem, and every pilot I've ever shook hands with presented themselves as a consummate professional. Still that nagging irrational sense of "I hope we make it" lingers.

In a few weeks, we are taking my daughter on her first flight... Let's hope she has a sense of wonder... perhaps I can even recapture that same sense that I once had.

I Used to love flying, until we allowed our manufactured fears, and the profits that can be extrorted from them, take over the whole process. You're lucky if you can make it to the boarding gate with one ounce shred of dignity in tact.

That having to give fake respect to some trailer trash, gheto queen, or wetback that doesn't have one skill beyond poking litter with a nail on a stick. Now they can arbitrarily decide if you have disrespected their badge and have you hauled off to that room, and your name mentioned on the news, involving airport security.

Then forget that every bit of humility in the whole flying process has been stripped away from it. The Airlines are now free to get as much passengers, cargo, and miles out each flight, to the point, no that a 22 inch waist is the norm in which the width of seats are made. Can't fit in the kids tea time chair, well they'll just charge you for TWO seats. Don't look for the human rights crowd, they are too fucking busy, laughing and calling you fat ass.

There's nothing remotely redeeming about flying. The whole affair would have been better if terrorist bombings either in the sky or the airport was a monthly occurrence.

Every time I get stuck in the security line on a cross country flight I just tell myself, "It is a lot easier than the train, driving, or taking a covered wagon across the country". Flying is a pain in the butt but it beats walking.

yeah, wished we had an alternative to flying. Like high speed trains. Amtrak is so damn slow and sometimes cost more than flying.

Then you have to pay for sleeping by getting a room. In several countries, even third class train rides all have sleeping for overnight trains. Three people sitting in a row will be able to sleep in bunk bed style design. Plus it is way, way cheaper than flying. Not so in America.

They should just give fat people knock out drops and fly them in cargo containers.

Children should all fly in the cockpit with the captain, so he makes the plane go faster.

Nah. The kids should be on pedal generators to power the engines.

Our rail network is not heavily subsidized like our highways. A miles-long freight is far more profitable to Union Pacific than your 10-car passenger set. So passenger schedules and occasional STOPS on sidings are wedged into the crevices not occupied by freight.

On whole though I've been happy with Amtrak for medium range, like say Denver to Sacramento which is a cool ride. Or the Pacific Surfliner. You can transfer Chase points into Amtrak and book a roomette or full bedroom at very good rates compared to cash.
