Airbnb tends to inflate the number of renters they have online. However they fail to crackdown on those who's rooms are not available because they are being rented out using a competing site

It won't be long until the Coops and Associations start passing regs about AirBnB in NYC apartment complexes.

Nobody likes strange people, who are unknown even to the apartment owners, entering the building, and it's particularly strong in NYC (and Miami) where complexes insist that even family members register as guests.

why cant the nsa just share 'everyones data' with all local governemnts, the airnb database must be in thier hands as well.
google can make a portal for city governments to look up the data base/emails/financial transactions of any company or person - for enforcing taxes and laws.

yes, we should make it perfectly clear that google's services are not free. you give up everything about yourself and lose your privacy and freedom in exchange for search results. same for all these other "free" services.

they are from satan. a deal you don't want to make, but can't refuse.

Prop F defeated in SF to limit rentals of Airbnb properties. Airbnb spent 8-to-1 (eight times as much) as the opposition, yet the vote was about 6% for. Pretty incredible.

Annette van Duren, a 63-year-old talent agent from LA, and her producer-husband, Alan Sacks, 73, used Airbnb on Oct. 21 to book a Chelsea apartment for a 10-day stay. They shelled out $2,081, or $170 per night plus a $45 cleaning fee and a $166 Airbnb service charge.

The couple was unaware that on the same day they booked, Gov. Andrew Cuomo signed a bill that would impose fines of up to $7,500 against hosts who posted short-term rentals, or that renting out whole apartments for less than 30 days had been illegal in NYC since 2010.

On the day of their Nov. 15 arrival at the 300-square-foot studio on West 22nd Street, Airbnb sent the couple a friendly “Tips for your New York trip” email. It stressed the importance of behaving as if they were staying with friends.

When the couple arrived at the five-floor, prewar building, luggage in tow, they were immediately confronted by a suspicious resident. “He said, ‘Who are you?’ ‘Where are you going?’ ‘Where are you staying?’ ” recalled Sacks. “I told him we were staying in an Airbnb, apartment 2R, for 10 days.”

“What you’re doing is illegal. If you don’t leave immediately, I’m calling the police,” the resident barked. “I’ll knock on your door all night long and let other tenants know you are here illegally if you don’t leave now.”

“Bang away. I don’t have to get up to go to work,” replied Sacks, best known as the producer of the hit 1970s TV series “Welcome Back, Kotter.”

The couple spent a quiet night in the Chelsea apartment. But the next morning, they received a text from the rattled host “saying I had to leave immediately. He reminded me of an email he said he sent, saying due to recent New York City law changes we had to be discreet,” said van Duren. “I never got an email like that. If I did, I would have canceled the reservation.”

Another problem with Airbnb we just discovered tonight: the host can cancel on you at any moment for any reason, and you're just fucked whether you have plane tickets or not.

Hotels don't do that.

Then there is the issue with hidden cameras.

But wait. What if a hotel, or a check-in clerk, doesn't want to rent the honeymoon suite to a gay couple because of its religious beliefs? Should the hotel be able to cancel the reservation as soon as it realizes the Sam in Harry and Sam is a Samuel instead of a Samantha? I mean, if hotels can't kick gay couples out on their ass on December 25th, claiming no room in the inn, then what does religious freedom mean?

Wow, that does seem to be a thing:

I am sure it's quite common. Done not only by perverts, but also hosts who are afraid for their possessions and feel justified to put surveillance cameras. Probably it is usually in the living room, hallway or at the entryway, but it is still unacceptable invasion of privacy.

With the advent of micro-miniaturized electronics and the proliferation of web enabled devices, one should just accept the fact that every moment of every life is being broadcast to every living being in 4k dolby surround. No more worries about if you are being watched. Just assume that you are.

Another note: you are not allowed to give bad reviews to hosts who cancelled on you in the last minute. You never stayed there, so you may not review!

In the reverse situation, where you cancel on the host at the last minute, you owe the full amount!

Airbnb is pretty scammy at its core.
