Men left waiting for hours as their partners get ready for a big night out won’t be pleased.

Women apparently dress to impress other women.

A poll of 2,000 debunks the myth that they spend hours in front of a mirror on a Saturday night to impress men.

The truth is, two thirds are trying to encourage compliments from their peers.

Six out of ten women aged between 18 and 30 said they had their girlfriends in mind when they chose what to wear on a big night out.

And more than a quarter said the most genuine compliments they received came from women they don’t know – not men. Yesterday a spokesman for Simple skincare, which commissioned the report, said: ‘There is an assumption that women go all out to impress the opposite sex, but this research has revealed this isn’t always the case.

‘The fact that so many women care about what their peers think of their appearance is only natural.’

She added: ‘On the whole, women are much more in the know when it comes to clothes, make-up and style, so it’s not a surprise that girls go out to impress other women as opposed to men.’

Two thirds of women believe that men say they look good regardless of what they look like and just say it as standard, without thinking.

And 48 per cent of women polled actually prefer to get a compliment from a female stranger as opposed to a man.

More than half of women say they have never got themselves ‘dolled up’ purely to snare a man and 22 per cent claim a man’s opinion doesn’t matter to them at all.

What are the odds that an obscure old blog post with data that, on first glance, makes women look shallow and bad, would be posted twice here? Well, when you have a site full of middle aged white dudes who see themselves as victims and who scour the net looking for proof, I'd say the odds are excellent!

If you can have boundless resources laid at your feet because of appearances only, nature would evolve you to spend a lot of time and attention on your looks and seductiveness i.e. the fertile female who puts all of her money on makeup, clothes etc.

It's not that women are more judgemental--it's that men are *less* judgmental. See here: we'll bang pretty much anything within very loose parameters (yes, pun bought and paid for). Oh, of course, we have minimal standards not to plow the ultra obese or smelly/hairy/manly ones, but, as my mama always said, "Bend 'em over and they all look the same."

This one has always seemed weird. No matter how many partners a woman has had, she keeps a mental list of other women who have had more than she has, and are therefore somehow loose. I figured it was just a self-esteem boost, but it seemed weird that it was always limited to women.

I wonder if the extreme disparity between the way men rate women and the way that women rate men could be because most men don’t take good care of their appearance?

When we are young we might, but once you settle down the beer gut happens and you neglect to shave or trim the facial hair, wear nice clothes, etc. And that’s before we get into the transformative power of makeup! Men don’t wear it, and it makes women look loads better! I’ve seen women go from a 3 to a 9 with the right application of makeup. What might be possible for a man? We don’t know, or rather we have only gay men for examples. No straight man wants to be confused with a gay man so we perhaps overcompensate with neglect on our appearance.
But some cultures do use male makeup, for instance Persians and some Indians. Does this make men more appealing to women?

Well, women constantly seem to be falling in love with gay men so there’s that data point.
I’d suggest that any man who is in the market for some booty do his best job on his appearance.

Don't underestimate the power of self-delusion in very horny males.

I am consistently impressed by the degree to which men assume that what they want is what women want, and vice versa.

Men think they need to be pretty. Not true! Ugly bastards get laid all the time. They just need the attitude and the money.

Women think they need to be "strong, independent women". Wrongo! Women desperately want strong independent men but really just need to be pretty themselves to gain commitment from some guy.

Men do not need looks to get women; women need looks to get men. Women therefore attach much more importance to this issue.

Men also see trying to improve their appearance as a chore in addition to all of the other things we must do in life, so it gets a lower priority.

Having OK looks is also useful of course; out of shape slobs don't look as successful as men who aren't slobs.

This is more of a testament to male and female behavior difference. Men are ranking women on whether or not they'd smash them. Women are ranking men on whether or not they'd marry them. Thats a FAR tougher standard.

HOWEVER as Just-D pointed out women still message those men at the bottom of the distribution MORE by a WIDE MARGIN. I would suggest this means women are actually less judgemental of a men's looks than vice is versa. The rankings are simply measuring difference thresholds. Women dont like A$$holes. What they like is a man who knows who he is and what he's about. A$$holes tend to directly express what they are looking for as compared to male feminist, for example. While any woman would prefer the confident, direct communicating nice guy , theres simply not enough alphas to go around. A$$hole > Soyboy for a woman.

20% or so of men are too incompetent to get a woman, another 35% are soyboys. Women crave confident, aggressive, potentially violent, competitive leaders. That is maybe 5% of the population. If you can be that 5% of men, getting laid is far too easy. I could field a basketball team w the 9's i bang on any monthly basis, so could most of the guys i hang with.

There's a lot of confusion about what women want, because it revolves around 2 opposite poles:
- the good father: kind, funny, considerate, intelligent.
- the alpha male: high status, strong, aggressive, but also assholes.
Themselves are sometimes confused about it. They tend to rationalize at an intellectual level that they really don't want the assholes, but given the opportunity they may not resist.

You can be rich all you want, if you are bald and short, it may not be enough....
