An End to Free Trade

Perhaps no single proposal by Donald Trump is as striking and antiquated as his strategy to keep American jobs from being "taken away" by foreign countries, such as Mexico and China.

Trump doesn't consider international trade to be a win-win proposition as do most modern economists. Instead, Trump believes that trade wars have clear winners and losers, and that currencies and trade restrictions must be used to ensure victory.

At various times throughout his campaign, Trump has pledged to put in place a 20% tariff on all imported goods. He told an audience that he would have told the CEO of Ford Motor Co. that he would have the government impose a 35% tariff on all Ford products if a Ford motor plant was shut down in Detroit and moved to Mexico. He has said that he would even impose a Chinese-specific tariff to offset the effects of Chinese currency manipulation.

Five-Point Tax Plan

Along with his 20% tariff on imported goods, Trump also wants to impose an additional 20% tax on companies that hire foreign workers.

The fifth part of the five-point plan is a simplified tax code with the following brackets: 1% tax on the first $30,000 in income, 5% tax on all income between $30,000 and $100,000, 10% tax on all income between $100,000 and $1 million, and a 15% rate on all income above $1 million.

Foreign Policy

Trump projects a hardline stance on illegal immigration, turmoil in the Middle East, and negotiations with China, Russia and Iran.

President Trump would push to build a physical wall on the border with Mexico. He proposed sending Exxon Mobil to Iraq to "take back the oil" to starve ISIS. However, he refuses to say whether he'd commit more American troops overseas.

I wish he would have kept his mouth shut until he got to the debates then hit those bozos with them then.
Now they are all going to get their Monkeys to out See, and out Do, Donald's hairdo.

He robbed us of seeing the GOP field drop to their knees with a punch in the Gut.
They are still brainwashed by the Libs and are prepared to do battle over cheesy social issues, Donald's issues would have been out of their league, if they were prepared to talk about abortion issues, the church's fight with the gay community, and getting trapped by the baited race traps the left has created. The GOP for the last 7 years have been trying to figure out on how to best out Social media the Libs with Social crapolla, and there goes Donald walking right past them with the argument right where it was left off before the Libs hijacked it. Right on point with all of the right words the GOP has been too afraid to say.

Sounds like he's saying everything I wish I said.

Interesting the donald couldn't get anyone to figure out how much money this will bring in. Doesn't he have any accountants that work for him? No wonder he's gone bankrupt so many times.

He's certainly colourful, probably wouldn't be any worse as president than the other 9 little indians. At least he's not got the totally loony rights dick in his ass saying thank you sir may I have another. What a shit field to choose from on both sides. I don't see anyone that should be president. Is Ross Perot still alive?

His 5 step tax plan seemed awfully arbitrary.

Why not 1% on incomee between 20K and 35K, 5% on income between 35K and 60K, 10% on income between 60K and 110K, 20% on income between 110K and 275k, and 40% on income over 275K ?

(perhaps raise it to 50% for the part of the income that's over 1 million per year).

Special note for people that don't understand progressive taxes: Under the plan I just described, the guy making a million a year would pay less than 15% on his first 275k, pay 40% only on the part of the income that is above 275K. This isn't communism.

What's wrong with Forbe's plan. Zero tax all the way to $50K. Flat tax after that.

This is very important. There are winners and losers and you play to win. Now the same policy 20 years ago might have been a winner-but it can choke us now. It is like bulls and bears-a permabear will lose heavily in a bull market and a permabull will lose heavily in a bear market. Lets hope he wins-at least he might give us free entertainment-if he does not meet the hype.

If extended to H1B visas destroys silicon valley and the majority of multinational corporations. Poof. Dead. Majority of sales growth for the big multinationals is all China and developing countries, since American consumer growth is much slower.

He pays for said wall how? (See Jeb's recent comments on what actual reasonable tough on immigration border control looks like.)

If Exxon is going to take the oil back, without ground troops, they have some new job reqs to post requiring mercenary and solider of fortune skills. The US and world opinion will not support a war for aggressive appropriation of another countries natural resources. That's the stuff of the 1800s.

Basically, Trumps path as I see it is the destruction of international business and the increase of trade wars, which will become hot wars based on his "tough on" non-diplomatic stance.

The Trump recipe is bankruptcy and war. Brilliant.

I'm a hiring manager at one of the predominant tech companies. I live "that crap" yearly. We hire tons of H1B visas specifically for localization and internationalization work so we can sell our products in Brazil, Indonesia, China, Malaysia, etc etc. Over 60% of our revenue comes from international sales.

So am I, though not a tech company and IT is just to keep the lights on and not our core/product. So mileage differs. Managing delivery from an outsourced solution across the globe for costs is not the easiest thing.

That's why the H1B is awesome : they come and work in our office. Most of them enter the lottery for green cards. We have huge segments of our HR division devoted to helping them jump through all the immigration loopholes to keep them.

Seriously, Trump has no freaking clue. The outline above as "good points" are a foreign policy and international business disaster. Stick to the real-estate and reality TV Mr. Trump.

14   lostand confused   2015 Aug 4, 8:01pm

Yes when all those companies , they didn't have to. if you put a 20% tariff on offshore resources and maybe an "import tax" on onsite, it won't kill that model. if it does, than maybe Americans can compete for the same. Global models to meet a global presence, but bringing global model here to replace Americans -slap on some taxes.

Well it depends. H1B you can use like slave labor-make them work 12 -16 hrs, weekends, always on with no care about their family. They are trapped until their green cards. Once they get one, they are gone and then become like normal Americans-then of course the cycle starts with some new wide eyed immigrant -LOL .

16   Rew   2015 Aug 4, 8:05pm

You think China sits still when we tariff imports of their goods? They do the same back ... and they start working on funneling the production of knock-offs for all the tech they are making now into high gear. Game over America.

We really don't want to exclude ourself from the largest growing consumer population in the world. Give it 5 years and China will probably equal greater than 50% of the revenue for my company ... even at the lower growth projections they are at now.

This is why trade wars are idiotic. Trade deals and agreements are not.

I guess that really depends on the company. People under H1Bs here are full-time employees for us. Managed for career growth, care and feeding, and making themselves and the corp. better.

They also work for less?

Free trade is idiotic. if you want a quarter inch, ask for an inch and then pretend you are upset you got only quarter. NAFTA and other agreements -especially the current TPP benefit the corporations to do as they will.

There are tens of millions with no chance in hell. At some point we have to think about what is good for the majority-not a few high tech companies. Currently we are a net importer and so a trade war is good for us. With shale, oil has a ceiling and we can turn the spigots on. With the others, we can play hardball. China may reach a point where they surprass us. We don't have to help them get there.

At some point, either we become like that or fight to keep our lifestyle. You can't have the largest rate of food stamps in history and free trade. Lots of issues all in parallel. The thing with Clinton./Bush/Obama is that they are for the status quo. If Apple or Google loses some revenue in China-who cares? But if the same trade policy creates 10 million lower middle class jobs-that would be far more beneficial-in terms of reducing welfare, increasing taxes etc-EGADS I am sounding like a socialist!!!

Ah you hire your own H1B-that is different. Most of the companies including current, we have an outsourced solution. So it will be the big consulting firms and us managing. But that is because I have worked mostly in companies that actually produce/manufacture etc and IT is just to keep the company going-an expense, not a profit center. I guess when tech is your product, you would need the best of the best-as they are the ones creating your "product" and hence sales/profit. That is a different dynamic.

You are hurting the remnants of the middle class to get blue collar sub standard jobs, with no hope of competing internationally, back into the US. Those jobs are gone gone gone.

Goog and Fruit are the envy of the gosh darn world right now.

You also close an amazing resource and talent draw the US has.

Know what Germany does for higher education? They pay for every student to go. Why? Students tend to stick around and work in Germany after graduation.

Imagine if that was the US and we had H1B visas going?

The future is going to be countries competing for the best talent, like they are corporations, themselves : this one has nicer laws, lower taxes, great scenery, good housing, medical care, lower crime ... etc. etc. etc.

Much as I don't like the term income inequality-because the dems call for higher taxes-that really is a problem. What we are doing is creating a small subset of population that live "fairytale" lives. While tens of millions who are hanging on by a thread-or gubmnt benefits. The dems solutions of raising min wage or taxes are misguided -but the problem exists. Do we want to be like some countries with rich surrounded by starving masses-or in our course 300 pound welfare freaks?? maybe the obese poor won't have the energy for a revolution-LOL!

But yes, I see your point. China and India were once global powerhouses. in fact America was founded because Christopher Columbus wanted an easier route to the riches of India. But my fear is we are following their footsteps into long term decay. A few tech companies concentrated in one area is not going to help the whole country.
I am glad I came to the Midwest, it has widened my horizons and allowed me to look at people with a different worldview. I don't know all the answers-but lets see which way it is going to lurch.

I agree we are creating mass inequalities. If you don't close tax loopholes for businesses, tax making money off money more, and increasing taxes on the top 1%, what is the solution? (The powers that be like a really complex tax code ... so they can game it.)

If those taxes are allocated for education ... America becomes unfathomably more powerful in just 1 generation.

The sad truth is no candidate, with a chance of winning, puts us on the footing we need. It's going to get really dangerous and populist based when that happens. ;) I give it 4 to 8 years. :)
